A Dry Joke

Some English editor has turned the poem we recently published into prose, and saddled Dickens with a ioke of it, as follows :—Charles Dickens told an American story of a young lady, who, being persecuted by the atientions of five young men, was advised by the Captain to “jump overboard, and marry the man who jumped after her.” Ac- cordingly the next morning, the five lovers being on deck, and looking very devoted'y at the fair traveller, she plunged into the sea Four ot the lovers immediately jumped in after her. When the young lady and the four young men were on deck again, she asked the captain. “Whatam I to do with them now, they are so wet!’ The captain— seeing, as he afterwards expressed it, “which way the wind blew”’—said, “Take the dry one.” And she did.

Natural Gas.

The use of natural gas from the se- called gas belt, extending from the oil regions of Pennsylvania to Mounds- ville, W. Va., asafuelto replace coal in iron toundries, is, it appears, rapidly making its way ; and it is statedthat a single ward in Pittsburg will consume $500,000 worth during the present year, Gas wells are now being sunk in all seetions where large supplies of fuel are required, and companies for the supply of natural gas to consumers on springiog into existance.
