It promises to be a place where we can toll at the family wash during the warm- er seasons. having all the tools of it assembled near at hand. and there it will be. in time and amid fragrant and new surroundings the cream-separating will be done. At the moment, because this calf or that litter of weanling: need whole milk in their rations. we are again in that state of dairying which allows for no separating. nor leaves any sign of immediate re- turns and yet seems in fit in well with the present scheme of farming here.

This week saw a number of the younger cattle. the calves of not so long ago and some older, turn- ed in pasture in the sizable and sheltered stump-field. It was there that the flock of ewes were lo be confined, but events happening daily, in singles and in pairs serve still to detain those in a near mea- dow wllhin sight of the farmers. The lambs provide much interest to granddaughter and the rest of the family as well. We come to a window to enjoy the antics of the number as they run spirited races in the sunlight much as like a group of children and obviously with equal delight. MINCEMEAT REFRIGERATOR COOKIES

5f cup shortening

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla.

1 teaspoon grated orange or

lemon rind

1 egg beaten,

2% cups sifted flour

$5 teaspoon soda

V: teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cin .

‘A cup of mlncemeat

‘>5 cup chopped nuts

Cream together shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and rind. Add egg and mix well. sift together flour. soda. salt and cinnamon. Fold gradually into creamed mixture alternately with mlncemeat. Add nuts. Mix into a stiff dough. Form into rolls. wrap in wax paper and store in refriger- ator (or chill thoroughly). slice ll inch thick. Bake on cookie sheets in moderate oven (375 degrees F). Makes about seven dozen cookies. The dDufh will keep in refrigerator for several days. nuts may be om- itted if desired.

DEAR. DOROTHY DIX: Not long ago you published an article in your column entitled “What makes a man a good husband?" Wlll you please write a companion piece to it on “What makes a woman

ANSWER: Well. taking it by and large, I think it takes a larger assortment of virtues and more know-how to make a woman a good wife than it does to make s man a good husband.“ It i; a harder job, with more angles to it. and hence more difficult to give satisfaction. It's like beauty. Hue- bands expect their wives to keep young and good-look. ing. but wives don't expect their husbands to maintain their boyish figures and keep their hair. But. coming down to brass tacks, I think that the thing that goes farthest towards making a woman a good wife is for her to be easy to live with. That is the virtue above all other virtues that every husband desires in his wife. He wants a wife who. An the words of the old poet, ls to his faults blind. to his virtues ve kind. _

Next, I would rate a sense of humor as s "must" among wifely‘ virtues. Every marriage is bound to have a lot of ups and downs in it. No husband is without his aggravating peculiarities, no children are not at times little pests. There are sickness and hard times prac- tically every family. But the ideal wife is the woman who can laugh things off. instead of having hysterics over them; who turns a smiling face on life and bucks her family up with her own courage.

A good wife is a woman who makes a career of Wifehood. She fakes it on the level. She doesn't expect her husband in be something that he is not and never can be. She knows all his faults and defects, but she never reproaches him with them. She makes of her love a cloak that hides his imperfections from others.

GOOD PROVIDER

The woman who is a good wife is a good provider. She la a good cook and feeds her family well and wisely. Her house is always tidy and a place of rest and peace.

In a word. it sums up to this: The good wife is a woman who tries as hard to make a success of being n wife as she would at any other pro- fession. She doesn't nag. She doesn't browbeat her husband. She doesn't whine. She doesn't neglect her children. She is the prop and stay of the family. She is friend. counselor and guide to her household. And you will find her everywhere, except in the divorce court.
