leston News and Courier contains the obituary notice of some person who died exactly one year previous to the date of the paper containing the notice. This custom isas distinctive of the locality as that of preaching deferred funeral sermons in North Carolina,— New York Post.

A Curious Word.

A good deal has been heard lately about the ‘“‘slump” in the financial world. The word is expressive, and is generally believed to be “slangy,” but has for some time been in general use. The African Review points out that it is of Danish origin, au *, accord- ing to Dr. Raven, was applied in many metaphorical ways. In his recently published ‘History of Suffolk” Dr. Raven says that it is still of common use in the county.
