HUNDREDS OF ORPHANS ARE VIET NAM PROBLEM

Two other children stood on the back of a_ truck, cracking jokes with soldiers and making’ faces at a pho- tographer. They had lost their fathers and mothers.

They still hadn't realized they were orphans

These children had sur- vived a concentrated Viet Cong mortar attack on this town headquarters and were being taken to an or- phanage in Saigon.

Their lot was a hard one, and all too frequent in South Viet Nam, where

about 800 government sold- jers ate being killed every month:~

It is estimated that 20,- 000 children running around Saigon streets lack parents.

Many foreigners believe The Vietnamese government has paid too little attention to the orphans of war. Gov- ernment officials answer that these children should be taken care of by rela- tives.

Many of the orphans do make their way back to relatives, some of them living deep inside Commu- nist zones.

Others are left to wander the streets.

The situation is made worse by the Vietnamese habit of having families liv- ing with soldiers in remote outposts
