( Unshod Horses, | An Englishman who has had great | experience in Brazil with working un- | shod horses,writes to the London 7%mes | proposing that the only important dif- | ticulty found with the asphalte pave-| ments, viz., that on a wet day the horses cannot stand on them, be solved | by leaving them unshod. He says that | he has worked unshod horses constant-— ly over the hardest and roughest roads | imaginable, and that the occurrence of | anything the matter with their feet | was almost unknown. He maintains) that unshod- horses could be used in| London streetsif they were used gently | for a fortnight after the shoes were re- | moved, and that in a couple of years after unshoeing all traces of corns, splints, and other nuisances would be gone. As to the objection that draught horses in starting a heavy load, have to dig their toes into the ground, he says they do not have to doit when unshod, but start the heaviest load with ease ( from the flat of the feet, Probably very few horsemen will agree with these as- sertions in tote, but we have no doubt that there are many horses which might be left unshod to advantage. Especially do we think that there is an unnecessary amount of shoe-iron wasted on our farm-horses, and many good feet spoiled thereby. eieceaansnn To write a good hand is one of the things every young man who means to succeed should set before him. Printers know what grave mistakes result from illegible writing. Mr. Loudon, the landscape gardner, wrote to the Duke of Wellington for permission to Inspect the beeches of strathfieldsaye. He wrote a bad hand. The consequence was that a few days afterwards the Bishop of London received the follow- ing letter from the Duke :—“ My dear Lord : I shall always be glad to see you at Strathfieldsaye, and my servant shall show you as many pairs of my breeches as you choose to inspect; but what you want to see them for is quite beyond me.

The Osterburgei Kreisblatt tells the folowing aneedote. At the annual festival of the Osterburg marksmen, a worthy citizen, Otto Bismarck by name, a master shoemaker, was elected king of themarksmen. The accidental coincidence between his name and that of the king of diplomatists led to the following telegram :—‘Otto Bismarck, of Osterburg, king of the marksmen sends his greeting on the present ferti- val day, to his excellency Prince Bis- marck, as his countryman and name- sake.” Great was the delight of the good people of Osterburg, when the following reply arrived from the great- est man in Germany :—‘“‘J return my hearty thanks to my distinguished namesake Her Otto Bismarck, of Os- terburg, for his friendly comratriot salutation.

A barrister, joining the circuit, had the misfortune to have his trunk cut off from the back of his postchaise, on which Lord Erskine consoled him by saying —“ Young gentleman, hence- forth imitate the elephant, the wisest of animals, who always carries his trunk in front, where he can see it.”
