The Gem needs:

Production Editor

This person must coordinate production and layouts, see that stories to be typeset are sent downtown on time, take care of the physical form of the paper (eg. design changes), set the distribution policy, oversee the photographer, and work with the editor-at-large to ensure that the layouts are com— pleted on schedule.

You don’t need a lot of experience to do this job (the last one didn’t have any), but you do have to be reliable, res- ponsible, and easy to work with. The job involves working odd hours, especially on Tuesday and Wednesdays, but it is a paid position.

Writers

. The mainstay of any paper. If you have a quick grasp of facts, and can take notes quickly and accurately, consider writing for the GEM. For the first few weeks the editor will discuss the basics of newswriting, and personally edit your work with you to help you write more effectively.

Sports, the Arts, movie reviews, features on almost any topic related to university life, the Senate and Student Union beats—-all these and more, just waiting for someone to bite, chew and savour. >

And unlike most classes, you aren’t told what to write, you volunteer for as much or as little as you think you can handle.

Now here’s what we want of you

Layout People

If it weren’t for you, there’d be no paper. You put it all together, decide what goes where and how, try to make our newspaper more attractive to readers, and catch typos before they embarrass us all.

Come along on Tuesday nights, bring a friend, and learn how to handle an X-acto knife and an electric waxer (sounds more exotic than it is, for the timid ones out there.)

Graphic Artists

If you speak better without using words, of if you like drawing eye-catching or amusing caricatures, you could be a GEM star of another karat.

Again, you can give as much or as little as you want, you get your name included on your work, and you may get your graphics in the Canadian University Press Graphics Exchange, a bi-weekly collection of the best from 52 campuses across Canada.

If you’re convinced .you don’t want to write, why not type? We like getting stories that are already typed, but many arrive written by hand. If you have a spare hour on Monday morning or afternoon, mosey on up. And no, you don’t have to bring your own typewriter... '

So you don’t want to commit yourself to a staff position, but have heard something you think people should know... why not let us know? Story ideas do tend to. become scarce sooner or later, and you may have something important, critical, or even amusineg trivial to tell. Tell us first. &

Rebates available

Blue Cross Rebates can be picked up at the Student Union office in the Barn until September 14. Students must show proof that they are participating in another medical plan to qualify for the $38 refund.
