Prof. Bouvier, at the Paris Academy of Sciences. has been describing the destruction of a telegraphie cable by insects. The cable (a land one) was laid in Tonkin in 1894, and was com- posed of seven copper wires protected by an insulating envelope coated with cotton andjute. In addition to this, it was placed in a leaden pipe. The first discovery of these interesting relics of past times was made hy the captain of a merchant vessel, which had stopped st a port on the northeastern coast of Madagascar to trade with the natives. During the stay at the point mentioned, the curious vessels used by the natives for water vases attracted the attention of the captain.
Upon investigation it was found that these odd utensils were in reality gigan- tic eggs cut in halves. Upon questioning the water carriers in regard to the bird that laid the eggs and the place where they were procured, the captain was given to understand that the bird itself was unknown, but that the eggs were discovered in a large sand bank some distance away in the up country, and could not be found elsewhere to the knowledge of the natives.

character, with strong claws. They pos- sess the ability to leave the nest as soon as hatched, and, by using all four legs, climb over hranches, twigs and tree trunks. This bird has also the power, even while young, to swim, dive and remain for a long period under water.
Soon after hatching the four legs begin to change, tne claws fall off, and the claw like members begome flattened into the point of an ordinary bird wing; feathers begin to grow, and when fully grown no sign remains of the queer fore- legs it possessed at birth.
The nestlings are the nearest approach toa quadruped found among existing birds.
The adult bird is nearly as large as the peacock, and lives in the densest forests. It 1s rarely seen, but its loud wailing ery is often heard in the woods. Its flesh has an offensive smell, from the vegeta- tion it selects as food, and thus renders it unfit for eatin:

Yhe wife of a physician who lives on Fourteenth street tells a story of a dis- tant kinswoman of hers who was her guest during the Christain Endeavor Convention, The kinswoman lives in an inland New England town, and when she came to Washington she spent one night of the journey on board a steam- boat. It was the firat time she had ever traveled by water. She reached Washing- ton extremely fatigued. The doctor's wife remarked it. ‘‘Yes, I’m tired to death,’’ said the kinswoman. “I don’t know as I care to travel by water again. I read the card in my stateroom about how to put the life preserver on, and I thought I un- derstood it, but I guess I didn’t, though. Some way I couldn't seem to go to sleep with the thing on.’’— Washington Post.
