A Rica Treat Comrne.—The members of | the Band of the 62nd Batalion, of St. John, N. B., will give two Grand Concerts in the Market Hall on the evenings of the 15th and 16th inst., comprising a Promenade Concert and Bonnet Hop. The reputation of this Band is sufficient to ensure a rich treat.

Tue Provincial Exhibition and Cattle Show will open at Summerside to-morrow. It has every appearance of being success- { ful, if we can judge from the entvies made , from this County. We understand that; over twelve car loads of live stock left the railway depot in this city for Summerside, this morning, all being entered for compe- tition at the Cattle Show.

Tue Deatu Srrvecite.—An Ottawa de- spatch of Saturday says: ‘‘ Messrs. Mc- Kenzie and Holton met the Governor-Gen- eral at Prescott Junction yesterday, and accompanied him to Montreal. Rumors of resignation of the Government are afloat, but it is not thought probable that it will take place until all the zeturns are in, though it is not doubted that it will follow immediately.”

Tue Patriot comes out to defend Donald A. Smith whom, in the words of Sir John, we designated the ‘“‘ meanest liar in the Dominion.” Doubtless our contemporary is jealous. We freely admit that the Pat- riot has strong claims to the distinction, and, if he feels hurt over our decision, we, at once, retract, and place him on the pe-

A very sad accident befel a little two- year old son of Hon. John Lefurgy, of Summerside, on the 26th ult. The little fellow got hold of a small bottle of creosote, which was accidently left in his way. He drank considerable of the drug, and shortly afterwards presented symptoms of death. Medical aid was immediately called, and he was apparently revived. It is currently reported that the boy died from the effects of the drug yesterday.

THe HantaNn-CourtNey RAcE appears to be the all-absorbing topic of conversation in Montreal. The contest takes place to- morrow. The oarsmen have not had much

Americans are offering lots of money on Courtney, but Hanlan’s backers appear to be holding off. While Hanlan has the most friends, a very large number of people believe that Court- ney will win.

An Otp Reuic.—Mr. C. C. Jones, of this city, has a relic of six (6) shillings proc- lamation, scrip datedthe 5th of March,1776, passed in the fourteenth year of the reign of His Majesty King George the Third,

Sales were brisk and prices moderate, as follows : Beef (small) from 5 to 14 cts.; do (quarter) from 4 to 8 cts.; lamb, from 5 to 10 cents; Mutton, from 5 to 9 cents; Chickens, from 25 to 45 cents; Ducks (each) from 20 to 30 cents; Geese (each) from 50 to 60 cents; Wild Geese, from 75 to 80 cents; Apples, per bush. from 60 cts. to $1; Plums, per quart, from 7 to 8 cts.; Butter, from 20 to 22 cts.; do., tub, from 16 to 18 cts., Hay, per hundred, from 35 to 45 cts.; Hides, from 44 to 5 cts.; Oats, 32 cts. for 34 lbs. ; Potatoes, from 20 to 25 cts.

THe way Contry pip 1r.—Mr. Conley, of Roxam, Canada, would appear to be a high spirited individual. From the Toronto Globe we learn that a Mr. Orr had a paring bee at that place, which is just across the Canada line from Vermont, and most of the neighbors were invited. An exception was Mr. Conley, who had injtred his repu- tation by stealing a sheep. Conley went all the same and was ejected from the house ; but the host offerd him a glass of whiskey to drink by himself in the wood- shed. That made Conley so angry that he killed Orr with a single blow with a heavy stick of wood.

Mrs. Youmans.—This well-known and popular lady will deliver a temperance lec- ture in the Athenzeum to-morrow (Wednes- day) evening, commencing at the usual hour, when, it is hoped, she will meet with

who stated :—I examined the body this morning. The forehead seemed to have been smashed in. I removed the scalp and a piece Of bone fell out. I separated the head from the body, and examined the back part of the head, and found there had been a blow there. At the base of the skull there was a fracture extending from the back of the head to the ear on the left side, and met the other fracture in front. { found on the right temple indications of ablow. Either the front or back fracture would be sufticient to cause instant death. | think the hairs-shown on the axe are hu- inan hairs. The spots on the axe look like blood spots, but I could not say for certain. DOWD ASSERTS HIS INNOCENCE.

Dowd was then asked if he had any further statement to make, and he said: I have nothing to say only that I am inno- cent of the crime laid to me. I could not say how the man came to his death no more than a child unborn. It looks as if he was murdered.

To a Juror--Mr. Boyne, do you think I would commit such a crime? [Dowd was here checked by the Coroner.[ hat is all I have to say.

\ VERDICT OF MURDER AGAINST DOWD AND AGAINST MRS. WARD AS AN ACCOMPLICE.

The room was then cleared, and the jury, after a short deliberation, found Thomas Dowd guilty, as principal, and Eliza Ward guilty, as an accomplice, of the murder of Thomas Edward Ward, on the 9th inst.

Dowd and Mrs. Ward were taken to the jail of St. Andrews, where they arrived on Sunday afternoon, in charge of John Rey- nolds. There they will remain until their trial at the Circuit Court, on November 12th, before Mr. Justice Weldon. Annie Ward will go to jail to be held as a wit- ness.

Emigration

‘he returns prepared by the Government emigration officers at Liverpool show that during the month of August, 9,495 persons left the Mersey as emigrants, the largest number in any month this year, except May, when 9,889 sailed. The largest pro- proportion—viz., 7,584—proceeded to the United States, while 1,641 went to British North America, and 63 to Australia. The / remainder sailed to South America, the East and West Indies, China, and the west coast of Africa. The nationalities of the emigrants were—Hnglish, 8,834; Scotch, 114; Irish, 786; and foreign, 2,091. Of G70 the nationalities were not denoted. The returns show an increase of 2,229 over those for August last year. The total number of emigrants from the Mersey during the present year, up to the end of last month, is 48,333.
