It was long ago suid to be inevi'- able, owing to the disappearance of the buffalo from the plains, that the Gov- ernment must either feed the Indians or fight them, and it decided to accept the former alternative. Aside from all notions of economy, it was prompted by a feeling of kindliness end sym- pathy ; but an experience of this year proves it to have been a mistake. In spite of a lavish expenditure of money, and a faithful desire on the part of the Government to put them in a position to be self-sustaining, no matter at what cost to the country, the Indians have proved themselves to be fully as savage and unreasonable as they were before the atiempt to civilize them was made. Untamed and untamable, they turn on the hand that fed them with a blind fatuity that seems to say Providence has decreed their disappearance, and that they should give place to another race, just as the buffulo of the past have given place to domestic cattle. They have, in the wildest and most unprovok- ed manner, and with circumstances of the basest treachery, begun a war of desolation such as has never been equal!- ed in the history of Canada, and having declared that they prefer fighting to being fed, the country must accept the challenge and follow up the war until the miserable wretches shall Be placed ener the power of doing any further

But thee were many old contributors on the paper —men with well-known names, who made an outery at this division of pro- perty. ‘They insisted that they ought to have been consulted, and they threat- ened to found opposition to Figaro, This alarmed the three principals, and they made a proposition to the effect that they themselves should take each $35,000 out of the concern yearly, and that the other men should each huve a salary of $7,500 a year, for the work they were to do, and at the end of the year draw alike sum out of the profits, thus insuriog them 15,000 a year each, Yet these men do not write an average of more thas half a column a day each — if, iadeed, that much—so that they have a very easy time of it. Itis one of the conditions that when any one of them dies his share goes to the other, so that the last survivor will have an enormous income. — Philadelphia North American
