Tux trial of the two circus employes, Dunn and Keboe, for assault with intent to kill, eommenced at Ottawa Friday. The trial of the former for the mtrder of Fleteher will not come up at the present term, and the Crown prosecutor stated Friday that it was just possible that it might not come up at all.

Tue first arrangement between an Irish landlord aad his tenants under the Land Act occurred on the Browne estate in Maye, be- longing to an ex-M. P. The tenants agreed te take fifteen-year leases at a reduction from three pounds to ten shillings a year. Several tenants have consequently withdrawn their notices sent tothe Land Commission.

Ox Sunday forenoon, October 30th, a little girl, aged two years and five months, daughter of Mr. Angas McGillivray, Near Seuth River, Antigonish, went out ef the house without being noticed, and although eearch was made for her within half an hour from the time she had left, yet no trace of her has yet been found. It is supposed that she strayed into a forest and perished.

SHop-urrrisc — Yesterday morning the shop of Mr. Charles Lawsen (Old Union Bank premises), (irafton Street, was entered, and a qnantity of goods stolen therefrom. Investi- gation showed that the thief first entered the cellar, and from the cellar passed into a porch in the rear of the shop. He then broke a pane of glass in the door leading to the hall, and drawing the bolt entered the hall Me then, with the aid of an axe, broke open the rear door of the shop and carried off thirty dollars in cash and the fol. lowlng goods:—l pair of boots, 3 pairs of socks, 2 pairs mitts, 2 bottles hair oil, 1 dozen silver spoons, | pair scissors, aud a quantity of tobacco. These goods were recovered in a vacant house in rear of the store. At a apecial mesting yesterday, the Cor- poration passed a resolution to confer the freedom of the city upon Dillon. Of forty members of the Council, only eighteen at- tended. No Conservatives were present.

It is understood that the American Lega- tion will take an early opportunity to thank the Government for the salute to the Américan flag when it was carried in the Lord Mayor’s procession on Wednesday. Che Legation has received letters from Mrs. Garfield to the Queen, Mr. Gladstone, Mr. Thomas Hughes and Minister Lowell, thanking them for their expressions of aympathy on ths. gccasien of the death of President Garfield.

The Times says: ‘‘ Yesterday’s Cabinet Council is not the first of a series in which weighty controverted questions of policy will have to be debated and determined. It is understood that the Cabinet will not be convened again for some time to come, unless some unexpected exigenvy presents itself. We may, therefore infer that the attitude of the government upon the Irish question remains unmoved and unmovable, Forster will return to Ireland with no restraint upen the executive authority.”

Gladstone, in replying toa letter from the secretary of the Protestant Educational Institute, says that the Government have sent no mission to the Vatican.

Lefroy’s solicitor is preparing a memorial asking for a respite for the prisoner, on the ground that his brother and grandfather died insane, and that he himself was insane when he murdered Mr. Gold.

Mr. Gladstone Speaks.

At the Lord Mayor’s banquet on the 9th Mr. Gladstone said:—‘‘ I can discern signs of improvement in Ireland. i believe the people of England are unanimeusly eon- vineed that it was necessary to take strong meastites in Ireland in defence of public iw and private liberty. One question at least has been decided. The peeple are determined to make a full trial of the Land Act. I hold in my hand very significant proof of the treatment to which the Trisk have been subjected by their so-called friends. It is a notice proceeding from a high authority stating that anybedy pay- ing rent before the suspects are released without the consent of the Land League will be boycotted. Though I cannet yet state that throughout Ireland the cevenants into which tenants have entered are punc- tually performed, yet they are largely and increasingly performed. Those who decline their performance are generally those who ate well able to fulfil their engagements. Ican safely say the Irish will make fuil use.of the Land Act, which will be impar- fially administered, ”

The Report of the Committee of the Dritish Association of Science to enquire as to the best means for the developmen: of light from Coal Gas of different qualities—comprising Dr. Wiiliam Wallace, Professor Dittmar, end Mr. Thomas Wills, F. C.S., F. 1, C. E., showed that Bray’s Burner’s yielded the greatest amount ot lizht of ali the two or three score of Burners reported upon. whieh includedal] the Burners of repute in the market,

In a pamphlet upon Light and Heat, pub- lished by R. B. Taber, A. M.,he says: “ ‘The cost of Gas as compared with other illumin- ants is much more economical when rightly used, than many suppose. From experiments macy for this purpose, the following results have been obtained. They were made by burning samples ot Devoec’s Brilliant Oil and ordinary Oils,and testing their illuminating power. It was found that Coal Gas costing one cent at $3 per thousand feet, gave a light equal to 18 candles, while Devoe’s Brilliant Oil consuming 27.4 grammes cost- ing halfa cent, gave a light equal to 9 candles.

“A good Argand or Jobnson’s Burner, the Burner’s used in the last experiment, will therefore give the light of 2 ordinary Oil Burners in direct comparison, at no greater expense in the cas2 of the finer and safer grades of Oil, Lights,however, on the author- ity of Scientists, are not to be compared in direct proportion, but in proportion to the squares of their powers, and such a com- parison with the case of the use of Gas, its cleanliness, freedom from odor and dangers, renders its use desirable wherever it can be introduced,”

As the above experiments were made with Gas at $3 per 1000 feet, and not consumed through Bray’s Burners, it will readily be seen how much more economical it is to con- sume Gas instead of Ojl, when its price is only $2.63 per 1000 feet as now charged here when consumed, more especially through Bray’s Burners.

Messrs. Goodwin & Uo,, of Philadelphia, the well-known manufacturers of Scientific in- struments for testing the illuminating power of Coal Gas, ctc., say iu their Circular to Gas Companies : “In presenting the Bray’s Stand- ard Patent Slit Union Burners and Lanterns, for which we are the sole Agents in the United states, to the attention of the public, we are convinced that we are filling a want long felt.’ They furtber add; ‘* The yield of light from these Burners is 12 to 20 per cent, greater per cubic foot of Gas consumed than that from any flat flame Burner hitherto in- troduced, [no 4 eod tf
