The Right Use of Symbols

Last evening's discussion in the open forum of the college extension courses was on the question of the place of symbols in religliaus experi- ence. The symbol was defined as storming for some action, subject. thought or purpose which is used to represmt rather than reproduce. It was shown that we use symbols ev- cryudsy in concretlze our experience ‘cr parts of it", for the purposes of description or thinking.

In religious experience, there is always an indescribable plus, which eludes us. Here the symbol comes in also to sugsist that which lies beyond the tlescriptizn.

The religious thinker, as well as the ordinary religiously minded, all down through the ages has used fig- ures. images and other things as symbols.
