D. Banxs McKenzie delivered a very good address on Temperance in the Reform Club Hall, last evening. A smali audience was present. Mr. McKenzie fails to draw the crowded houses he did »n his previous visit. This shows a sad .oss of enthusiasm in a good cause, and proves that a very large number of those who at that time donued the blue ribbon, have deserted their colors.

Dreruexia is, and has been, for the past year, raging im ifferent parts of the Island. In the city it has prevailed to a great extent, but few cases have terminated fatally. Not so in the far outlying country districts where medical aid is almost impossible to be had. Week after week we hear of poor farmers losing two and three of their child- ren within a short space of time by this terrible disease. To-day we learn of the greatest and saddest loss yet reported. A correspondent informs us that Mr. James E. Hughes, of Dromere settlement, Lot 37, has, within eight days, lest eight of his children by diptheria.

Drownep.—From the Log Book of the brig ** Fannie,” which arrived from Dema- rara on Sunday last, we «xtract the follow- ing report of a drowning accident which occurred on a recent passage : —‘*‘ Wednes- day, 20th March, 2 p.m., lat. 25°55 min. N. longt. 35°11 min, W., William Canary, A. B., while engaged in tarring the fore-topmast rigging, fell from the fore top, over the fore yard, and struck the rail heavily, and went overboard. The cook and one of men got hold of him by the clothes, but they gave away, and he sunk at once. It appears he was either in a fit or stunned with the fall, as he never floated again. The boat was put overboard, and the vessel brought to, and all efforts made to save him, but failed. The sea was smooth, and the vessel going through the water about 14 knots at the time. He joined the ship Feb. 21st and belongs to Buffalo.
