SENTENCED.—John Wesley Selliker, who pleaded guilty to an indictment for: horse goealing at the late session of‘ the Sypreme Conrt at Summerside, was on Thursday last sentenced by Chief Justice Sullivan to three years in Dorchester penitentiary.

_Narronat Drviston.—The National Di- vision of North America opens in Associa- tion Hall, Ocean Grove, New Jersey, on Wednesday, July 9, at10a. m. It is ex- pected that the different provinces and states wili be well represented.

Gas anp Execrric Light.—There are 1,048 gas companies in North America, and of these 304 also operate electric lights. ‘ihe Thom- son-Houston system is adopted by 195 of them, and the others have divided their patronage between the Westinghouse, Brush and other systems. So says the Hlectris World.

Convent Examination, —The classes in St. Joseph’s Convent were examined yesterday. Among those present were Hig Lordship Bishop Mcintyre, Mgr. Gillis, Revs. A. Macdonald, A. J. MelIntyre, A. Me- Aulay, the Cathedral clergy, and Prof. Caven, E. Roche, John McSwain and Mr. Mc- Grath. The pupiis acquitted themselves in a very praiseworthy manner, reflecting great credit upon their teachers. At the close ot the examination complimentary remarks were made by several of those present.

New Barrist Cuurceu.—The foundation of the new Baptist Church, on Prince St., is laid, and work has been commenced on the walls. It is expected that the building will be ready for occupation about the Ist October next. The cost of the main build- ing, including heating, upholstering, etc., will be about $12,000. The outlay to date in cash is about $4,000. aE ese A CENTENARIAN.—Mrs. John Macdonald, »se River, Lot, 42, will be one hundred years old on Tuesday next, j7th inst., and it is the intention of her relatives to celebrate the event in a becoming manner. A handsome birthday cake, manufactured expressly for the occasion by Mr. W. F. Carter, of this city, was sent up to her residence this forenoon. Mrs. Macdonald is the eldest danghter of the late Angus Mclatyre, Cable Head, and nS sister of His Lordship Bishop Mclntyre. She was born at Naufrage, Lot 43, on the 17th June, 1790. Her husband died about forty-six yearg ago. Mrs. Macdonald has eight of her family ‘yet living —four sons and four daugh- ters. Her eldest son, D. J. Macdonald, is seventy-six years of age. Up to the last few months Mrs. Macdonald could knit and sew with comparative ease, as her eyesight was re- markably good. ;

Montreal Harbor Improvements.

Orrawa, June 18. John Page, chief engineer of the railways and canals department. and Mr. Coste, acting chief engineer of public works, who were recently appointed as a provisional commission to report on the plans for the proposed Montreal harbor improvements, have submitted a report to the Government. They reach the conclusion that another commission should be appointed for the purpose of gathering information, before any plan is adopted. A Compromise Made.

Cotumevs, O., June 13. The striking street car men accepted the proposition of the Consolidated Company, and will réturn to work at the compromise scale of $170 for conductors, and $160 for drivers.
