course for the defense to adopt- but to attack declarer where he is presumably strong is rather rare, and can be justified only in ‘exceptional circumtances. _

Excellent defensive reasoning was required of East in this deal to defeat the four heart contract.

He won the opening club lead with the king. Had he led an- other club, declarer would have made the contract easily. After ruffing the club and drawing two rounds of trumps, South could then force out the A-K of dia- monds and discard his three spade losers on the: established diamonds.

But East decided that South had started with a singleton club Pin view of West's club raise, and that a club continuation was. fu- tilé-in the face of dummy’s threat- ening diamonds.

It was clear that West must have had an ace to justify his two club bid, and the question of which ace was held by West be- came pertinent if the contract was to be defeated.

If West had the spade ace the cause was hopeless, since de clarer would then have only two spade tricks to lose and no others The king of diamonds, in such case, would be dead.

If West had the trump ace the contract would likewise be un- beatable, since declarer would have eleven tricks available.

Only if West had the diamond ace was there a chance to defeat the contract. But this alone would | not do the job, since taking two! diamond tricks would bring the defence to only three tricks.

The setting trick had to come from elsewhere, and the only feasible source for a fourth trick was in spades. This required West to have the jack of spades also, but it was not an unlikely card for West to hold.

So East returned a low spade | at. trick two, West's jack forcing dummy} queen. Declarer drew two trumps and led a diamond, West trumps and led a diamond. West grabbed the ace, returned a spade, and South went dowa one.
