Who is a Gentleman.

A gentleman_is not merely a person acquainted with certain forms and eti- quette of life, casy and self possessed in society, able to speak and act and move in the world without awkward- ness, and free from habits which are vulgar and in bad taste. A gentleman is something beyond this; that which lies at the root of all his pleasing is the same spirit which lies at the root of every Christian virtue. It is the thoughtful desire of doing in every instance what others should do unto him. He is constantly thinking, not ‘ndeed how he may give pleasure to others for the mere sense of pleasing, but how he may avoid hurting their feclings. When he is in society, he scrupulously ascertains the postition and relations of every one with whom he comes in contact, that he may give to each his due honor, his proper positen, He studies how he may avoid touching in conversation upon any subject which may needlessly hurt their feelings how he may abstain from any allusions which may call up a disagreeable or offensive association.

A gentleman never alludes to, never appears conscious of any persen’s de- fect. bodily, deformity, inferiority of talent, of rank, of reputation, in the person in whose society he is placed fle never assumes any superiority to himself—never ridicules, never snecrs, never boasts, never makes a display of his own power, or rank, or advantages —such as is implied in ridicule, or sar- casm, or abuse; and he never indulges in habits or tricks, or inclinations, which may be offensive to others.

2+? - Influence of a Soft Voice.

Yes, we agree with that old poet who said that a low soft voice was an excel- lent thing in women. Indeed, we feel inclined to go much further than he on the subject, and call it one of her crowning charms. How often the spell of beauty is rudely broken by course, loud talk! How often you are irre- sistably drawn to a plan, unassuming woman, whose soft,silvery tones render her positively attractive! In the social circle, how pleasant it is to hear a woman talk in that low key which/ always characterises the true lady ! In the sanctity of home, how such a voice soothes the fretful child and cheers the weary husband!

Anything which adds to the beauty and cheerfulness of a home adds to its permanent value. There are many gems in the flower creation which, when once implanted in the soil, will continue to grew in beauty year after year, and remain joys forever to the fortunate possessor. All will admit that this department of nature is well worthy the study of man. “Flowers are not the trifles which many think them to be, or God would not have be- stowed the care on them that he did.”
