Government’s Majority.

The first division of the session took place in the Legislature here yesterday. The ques- tion waa the petition of Dr. Atkinson, who was counted ont in Carleton County The Opposition desired to refer it to the Privil: ges Committee. Mr. Blair moved ia amendment that in all cases where the defeated candidate hed an appeal to the courts, uo petition from bim shall be entertained by the House usless a deposit of $10,000 is put up ee™pay the ex- penses. The Opposition speakers maintained that Blair's Centroverted Klections Act, com- mooly known as the whitewash bill, deprives a candidate counted out of his right ot appeal from the decision uf the returning officer, and they claim that Dr. Atkinson had no remedy except his petition. Mr. Blair's moticn was carried by a vote of 24 to 13. Mr. Hill, of Charlotte, formerly Speaker of the Legia- lative Council, who was elected on the Pio- vincial Secretary's ticket last year, voted against the Government.

NEWFOUNDLAND BAIT

A Change of Policy.

The Newfoundland Government has turned another somersault on their bait policy. For yours the sale of bait has been rigorously refused to the French upon any terms, while it has freely been sold to the Americans without any restrictions. Fora couple of years the Government attempted to boycott Canadian fishermen on the bait matter. But last year they returned toa common-sense treatment of Canadians. Now they announce an entire change of programme in regard to the supply of bait to both American and French. Hereafter, fishermen of both nations are to be placed upon an equal footing, and will be supplied with all the bait they want tpon psyment of an annual license of $1.50 per ton on each vessel requiring bait.

Montreal Money Market.

There was great excitement on the local stock exchange on Thursday owing to an un- natural stringency in the money market which was cansed by three banks having called in, during the last few days, $5,000,000 to loan out in New York, where intere \ rates were higher. The Sank of Montreal, however, which very seldom leads money on the street, came to the rescue yesterday and offered money freely,thus easing the sitaation. Money is again plentijul, beth hete and in New York, and the market at the close was buoy- ant.

Hou. Edward Blake rejects the sugges- tion that he may lead the Irish party. Mr. Blake further states that he has no inten- tion of remaining in Englend after the Home Rule battle has been won. He states that he has formed too many ties, after thirty years’ residence in Canada, to lightly overcome his desire to return to the familiar fireside.
