Da Lapercs, health officer of Montreal, has before him one of the most difficult pro- bl-ms which it has ever been the lot of man to solve, A little girl two years old was to have beev discharged from the smallpox hospital on the 4th inst, but during the afternoon two women called, and each being positive that the child was hers, the nurses refused to give it to either. ‘The matter was referred to 'r Laberge, who went with the woman to see the child, which is very much distigured, but it was too young and had been too long in the hospital te recognize its mother. Both women produced proofs of their marriage and

VACCINATION.
The Medical Record, of New York, has the following strong argument in favor of vaccination. Among the many queries, it says, which the present extensive revival of vaccination hag raised, isthe one relating to the effect of vaccination upon one who has already had s:nallpox or varioloid. We have been somewhat surprised to find that vaccination ‘‘takes” with those who have had smallpox, two or three cases having come under notice. Upon inquiring of a physician whose position at the Board of Health has given him a wide opportunity for observation,he assured us wit’ o t hes t: tion, that after smalJpox vaccination will take always, and in the primary form. Moreover, that vaccination is asurer safe- guard from smallpox than smallpox itself, for he knew of au instance where unvac- cinated individuals had had the disease two or three times. This information is there- fore of great importance, for most people who have had smallpox feel that they are sealed with an immunity greater thana lifetime of continued vaccination gould pro- duce for them.
