But the prospect is improv- Ing Ov ts are in some demand for the neghboring Provinces and the British market at 34 cents per bushel. Several sh:ps are loading for the Old Country Bur farmers are just now too busy to bring along their grain. A good many eggs are being sent to the Eng'ish market, and the demand is improving Some of our dealers are shipping all their eggs for England by the Furness Line, of which Mr. W. W Clarke is agent here, and others are going into it more largely than ever, It is pleasing to learn that the quality of our egg®, on arrival in England, is reported ex- cellent, snd that there are enqviries for more. Potatoes remain a complete drug everywhere. The nominal prices here are 18 to 20 cents per bushel.

Lobsters are fair at Port Hawkes- ‘bury, but poor at Louisburg, West Arichat jand St. Peters. Cod and gaspereaux fair at Port Hood, and a few cod at Ingonish and Louisburg. Haddock are reported at St. Peters, but few have been taken yet Nova Scotia— Codfish good to-day at Port Medway, fair at Musquidobvit harbor and a few cod and lobsters at Canso. Spry Bay and Pubnico boats arriving at Canso from the banks report poor catches, owing to stormy weather, lobsters fair at Biue Rocks, Lewis Island and Rose Bay, while at Isaacs Harbor, Musquideboit harbor and Port Medway the catch has been light. Gaspereaux very plentiful at Port Medway, good at Musquidoboit harbor and poor at Pubnico.

Siz,—T beg to ask the owners of the M |! A. Starr if it is their intention to have her call at China Point Wharf this summer ? So far she has almost failed to do go. Whether the fault rests with the company or the fellow in charge of the boat, no per- son knows. Be this as it may, the perple of China Point and vicinity have grown heartily tired of the humbug and neglect cf the steamer on the route between Cher- lottetown and Orwell—nor can they long: r endure the insolent and overbearing con- duct of a self-conceited ignoramns who is clothed for the time being with a little authority, but steeled against the mellow- ing influence of civilization. Sin.—I take the liberty of trespassing on your valuable space for the purpose of pro- testing against the treatment which is in- flicted upon the people of this vicinity in the matter of communication with Cbar- lottetown. Our communication with the Capital was, up to the time of the loas of the steamer Heather Belle last fall gener- ally satisfactory to the public. Since then the service has been performed by an anti- quated collier in no way fitted for the ser- vice. On account of her great draught of water, she is unable to reach the wharf ex- cept at high tide, thus necessitating the conveying of passengers in boats, a circum- stance attended with the utmost discomfort and inconvenience, and even danger, e8- pecially to lady passengers. By way of ac- commodation are a couple of small, cold and cheerless saloons reached by steep and dangerous ladders, and all thickly-coated | with last year’s fiith—such accommodation as might have been provided for a band of | slaves in the days of their hardest servi- tude. But such treatment is quite in keeprng with that which Belfast always re- ceived from Grit rulers. Such are the fruits Belfasters have invariably gathered from the baneful tree of Gritism. Ever since we were cruelly sold by the arch- traitor who now so fitly presides over the organ of the Star Chamber Government ia P. E. Island, and who, not satisfied with cheating us of the railway, foisted upon us an old huik of a boat (“The Maid of the Mist”) subsia zed by the Grit Government, of which he was then a member, not for the purpose of bettering the eervice, but
with a view to running «ff the route another and more suitable at whose great fault was that she was largely owned by a politi-
cal opponent; since then, I say, till the resent, communication with Belfast has n hampered ander Grit rule, and the partisan spirit which prompred the running of the Maid of the Mist is the same which now allows on this route the M. Starr, to the great saunoyance of the travelling public in this section of the country, for though the Inland Steam Navigation Com-) pany’s tender was not the lowest, nor the) company likely to give any better service, et it is largely composed of the *‘*faith-| ful” and consequently must be pampered, petted and pleased. In view of all this we naturally ask what are our representatives doing, or for what purpose do these; worthies think they were elected ¢ Where | is the dashing young politician whose fiery | soul was bursting with indignation, and a} zeal not to be quenched, as he dilated upon the wrongs and grievances of his loved | native district at the last general election. fas he forgot all the bright promises he then made? And what of the glowing pictures of prosperity which he then paint- ed asa resuit of the triumph of Gritism? Too often alas ! has the heroism of the field been laid aside for the sensual pleasures of the court, and our quondam hero now basks in the sunshine of his own splendor and sips the ephemeral sweets of worldly pleasure, an employment more gratifying and less arduous than looking after the And where is the staid old statesman who represents us as the council board, whose svle claim to the position he occupies seems to be his unlimited capacity for saying uothing, and the sublime silence of whose political ex- istence is broken only by an occasional “aye,” given in response to the bidding of the autocrat whom accident has made lead- er of a government in this Province! Is he, in common with his colleagues, so com- pletely inflated with his own grandeur as to regard the grievances of common Belfasters two petty fornotice? It would have been much more to his credit had he attended to the wants of the district he represents instead of wasting his time in the vain at- tempt to frame a cunstitution for the per- petuation of Grit rule in defiance of all known principles of British Government.

—The recommendations cf the Canadian Civil Service Commission embrace: Firat the appointment of a permanent Civil Service Commission whose duty it will be o test the fitness for office of candidates, for appointment or promotion, to any office or position in the civil service, with full power to enquire into and report upon the state and management of pubiic business and the official conduct of public servants ; secondly the adoption of the English principle of appointment by open com- petition, that age limit at which a person may enter the service be twenty five, instead of thirty-five, and that no new vffice be created without the sanction of Parliament ; thirdly that the maximum salary of Deputy Hane be increased from $4,000 to $5,000, and that the maximum salary of first-class cle*ks to be hereafter sppointed be $1,600 instead of $1,800; of second-class clerks, $1,200 instead of $1,400; and third-class clerks, $800 instead of $1,000.
