Captain Rudolf, late Master of the iil fated Steamer ‘‘ Mon- treal,’’—Louis Roberge, mate, and Jean Baptiste Dorval, pilot, have been refused bail. Mr. Alleyn, counsel for Captain Rudolf, renewed his application to the court. The term was finished, and six months would elapse before the trial would come on, and bail to any amount could be given. Mr. Justice Duval is reported to have said :-—*‘ Since the former application was made to me on behalf of Rudolf, Roberge, and Dorval, the Grand Jury have returned a “ true bill’ against them for manslaughter. The objection therefore against their admission to bail isstronger. It was quite impossible that the trial of the prisoners could take place during the term which has just been closed. In this matter the Crown has acted with unusual diligence, indeed, no want of diligence on the

rt of the Crown can be alleged. The indictment was a most uaportant one, and it is very seldom that a bill of so special a character has been brought within so short a time. The evidence is most voluminous, and it is, therefore, the more unusual that such an indictment was prepared so soon after the finding of the Inquest. In the interest of justice I abstain from discussing at length the reasons which induce me to adhere to my previous decision, and to decline admitting to bail the parties already named.”’

The Toronto Pilot complains that the postponement of this trial for six months was in direct opposition tu law.

A collision oceurred on Lake St. Peter's, below Montreal, on the night of the 4th inst., between the steamers Quebee and Montmorency. ‘The latter was sunk, bu‘ no lives were lost. She was laden with flour.

Sia,—On looking over the Islander of the 81st ult., I came across a communication from that exceedingly modest man, William Heard, alias Holy Willie, purporting to be a reply to my letter in the Examiner of the 20th ult., in which he states that I wish the public to believe that I have been made the innocent victim of such men as James Duncan, John Ings, William Bourke and himself. You are mistaken, Brother Heard ; wy intention was not so much to make the impression you state, (that having previously been ac- complished by the verdict of the Jury free from any quibble of law,) as to shew that they were influenced by your sophistry and peculiar method of distorting facts to suit your own purpose, which have obtained for you of late such un- enviable notoriety. You say that I have escaped the de- mands of justice—you ought to have written injustice, when

| forming about one-third of the entire bulk. This is a Greenland teats at the lower part of the abdomen. ‘The fins of the tail are flat, and placed longitudinally, and measures from the end labout 25 feet across. The fins ure one on each side—about | nine fect in length. The color of the fins and tail are yellow- white ; the tail being partly clounded as it terminates. The )abdomen is black—being ribbed with large muscular bands | passing longitudinally from the head to the tail, each band }measuring about nine inches in width—at the present this outward covering is curling and peeling off from the effect of the sun, and beneath appears a solid fatty substance—the oil | ouzing out copiously from the whole surface, of a very strong poder, intermixing with the sea-water. The body looks like a large Indian canoe turned upside down. Several persons got on it, and were walking—or rather wading—on its surface every step. By putting the hand under water the mouth is reached ; and it is covered with long stout bristles of whale- | bone, from eight to ten inches in length. We brought home iseveral pieces of the outward skin, and a handful of these bristles,

The careass of the whale has been purchased by Mr. Dean. One-half of the value is claimed by Messrs. J. P. Jewell, Tam- worth, New Hampshire, the owners of the vessel. The residue is to be equally divided between each of the crew, consistin of 12 persons. Preparations were making for rendering the | oil—dissection has already begun,—and the naturalist will be further gratified by paying another visitation as it progresses. Few anatomists can undertake to ascertain the conformation and figure of this great inhabitant of the deep, where the operators, instead of separating with a lancet, must cut their way with a broad-axe and hand-saw—/Js/.
