Challenge ’93: Rough Summer Ahead For Students

OTTAWA- Wednesday, the Minister of State for Youth, Mr. Pierre Cadieux, announced that the budget for the challenge 93 Summer Em- ployment/Experience Development (SEED) Program would be increased by 5.1 million over last year’s budget, bring in the total budget for SEED to $88 million. Perhaps the Minister thought he was being generous, considering the hatchet job his government has done to other programs, but students know that this increase won’t begin to make up for the devastating effects the recession has had on summer jobs over the past few years.

Kelly Lamrock, Chairperson of the Cana- dian Federation of Students, acknowledged that “the Minister made an offer, but it’s not good enough. Because tuition fees and costs of living have greatly increased over the last ten years,

summer jobs are increasingly vital for students. the government will not admit that students have beenhit hard by the recession, even though the unemployment rate for returning students was 17.9% last summer’’. Lamrock .added, “students find it difficult to be thankful for an increase that leaves the SEED program far short of its 1989 budget, which was $118 million’’. The government also announced that Chal- lenge ’90 will favor employers who hire high school students, which, Lamrock said, ‘‘is a shift from the program’s initial aims; providing career related jobs to all students. Let’s not ignore the high costs facing post-secondary students. If the government is really concerned about providing summer employment for all students, it should come up with programs tailored to each specific group. Right now, by transforming Challenge ’93 into a one-size- fits-all program, nobody really benefits’’.

Safe walk program Student campus police are responsible for safety and security of the students who call looking for an escort on campus. All student campus police have taken a certified self defence training program from Patron Control and Consultants. The Safewalk program was introduced in January of 1993. This program was imple- mented to benefit the students. However, due to lack of usage, this program may be jeopardized. We strongly encourage the students to take advantage of the services at their disposal or the program shall cease to be funded and therefore lose the service that was strongly recommended by Mr. Brain Ash.

This past weekend was the Atlantic Universi- ties Undergrad Biology Conference (AUUBC) hosted by St. FX in Antigonish. The AUUBC is achance for undergrads doing research to present itto other undergrads. In additionto somereally interesting presentations (from genetics to aquaculture) and guest speakers, the weekend was a blend of partying with other undergrads (man, can those Capers party. The same goes for the shy and quiet Loretta and Sylvie!) and relaxation (right Andrew).

Congratulations to Cathy Mosher who did an AWESOME presentation and a special thanks to the wild driver Prof. Hale who brought us there.

The AUUBC will be held here at UPEI next year and its going to be even better than this year’s.
