Shortly after eight o'clock the signal was given, the band struck up, and soon the glass-like sur- face was literally covered with a mass of humanity iu all shapes and sizes and attired in fantastic costumes. As they moved around the rink they were the subject of consider- abie comment. Darting hither and thither with heads lowered, and fans and umbrellas raised, might be seen the ‘* Three Little Maids from School,” while in their wake, and looking anxiously forward were the tw» friars who appeared anxious to dispose of soine of their ‘* soft soap.” Chen there was the ‘* Fishwife” with her basket and characteristic odor, and ‘* ,. E. Island ’ with her grain, ete., and the sug- gestive inscription ** Foreign Mails Tuesday Week,” both of whom attracted a good dea! ofattention. There were also ‘* Minerve,” ** Marguerite,” the **Goddess of Liberty,” the ‘Lady, time of George III,” the ‘“ Lady of the Court of Queen Anne,” ‘Princess Ida,” the **Daisy” and several others who failed to hand in their cards.

The two buxom ‘Starvation Army” lassies with their ** poke” bonnets, tam- bourines and subdued bustles, attracted considerable attention by the scientific manner in which they ‘‘ saved” the ‘*Ten- nis Player” and the ‘‘Snow-shoer:” ‘An- archy ’’ was, in the opinion of many, the best character on the ice. ‘* Dick Turpin,” the ‘‘Shah of Persia” and * Arabian” were also conspicuous characters. ‘* Robin Hvood,” ‘The Squire,” ** The Great What ls it?” the ‘*Three Wonders,” ‘“ Sir Charles Marlow,” ‘ Pawnbroker,” etc., were all very good impersonations.

There was a profusion of pages, fairies, ete., all ot whom looked very pretty. The “bP. R.” was also represented by two light-weights (very), who looked real vici- ous with their fierce ‘‘moustachios.” The colored element was conspicuous for its absence, buat there was a fair sprinkling of such common-place costumes as **Cricketer,” “Tennis Player,” and ‘* Snow-shoer,” with here and there a stray ‘‘ Fireman,” ‘‘ Fish- erman,” ‘** Volunteer,” etc.

Tus ‘* Bean” Socrat.-—This novel kind of 2 ‘** sucial"’ was held in the upper Methodist Church last evening. ‘The entertainment was

evened with a pretty accordeon solo by Mr. A. E. Crosby, and was followed by -.n instru- mental chorus by Messrs. D. 8. Strong, (violin), Charles Rodd (cornet), L. Worthy (fiate), and Mrs. L. Sentiner as accompaniest. The solos by Miss Hobbs, Miss Sellers and Mrs. L. Sentiner were nicely sung, and the veadings by Miss Lawson and Miss Gunn con- tributed largely to the pieasure of the even- ing. The audience was boisterous at times, it is true, and the entertainment suffered some- what as a result ; but, on the whole, it was very enjoyable. Great credit is due the young adies of the band and others for the off-hand- ed and pleasant manner with which the beans and brown bread were served. —__~ <=

A BREACH OF PRIVILEGE,

Lonvon, Feb. 13. When the procession in honor of Sulh- van, M. P.. reached the Park, the persons composing it grouped themselves around the platform at Reformers’ Tree. Sullivan was given #n enthusiastic reception by the 40,000 present. .He was presented with an address, and in reply he said the Goverp- ments wretched attempt at coercion had not sufprised or frightened anyone. Irish patricts had been imprisoned because they had disregarded a law which English- men would have trampled under foot. The tory reign f terror was doomed to a speedy termination. At the end of the speech cheers were given foy Sullivan, Gladstone and Home Rule. Sullivan was banqueted at the Criterion to-night. Picton, Home Rule member for Leices- ter, directed attention in the Commons to- day to the arrest last week in London of Messrs. Pyne, O’Brien and Gilhooly, Lrish members o, Parliament, which, he claimed, constituted a breach of privilege. ‘The Speaker said Pyne and Gilhooly were ar- rested on > criminal warrant. In their case there was no breach of privilege. Mr. Mathews, Home Secretary, apologized for the indignity to which O’Brien had been subjected.’ The occurrence was unfortu- nate, : Sir R, E. Webster, Attorney General, denied that any privilege existed. Ex- planations and apologies had been given. If they didn’t suffice or satisfy O’Brien, he could prosecute and get a remedy _else- whore. Picton moved that the wrongful arrest of O’Brien when leaving the Commons was 4 breach of privilege of parliament. After a cebate, the mution was negatived without division. James C. Flynn, member for North Cork (Loyalist) resumed the debate on the ad- dress in reply to the Queen's speech. Parnell inade along speech, and then moved the following amendment: ‘‘ Hum- bly to represent to Her Majesty that the only remedial _ portion of — last ses- sion’s Irish legislation tended to diminish crime, whereas repressive measures had done much to alienate the sympathy and respect of Her Majesty's [rish subjects for the law and the adminis- tration of the Crimes Act, as well as much of the general action of the executive has been harsh and partial.” The debate was

The Track Submerged.

ANNAPOLIS, Feb. 13. The extraordinary rainfall- of Saturday submerged about one mile of the Windsor & Annapolis Railway track between Ellershouse and Stillwater which was frozen and c;,uséd a complete suspension of | traffic to-day. The ice is six inches thick, and as soon ¢$ auy portion is dug out it is again covered with water and freezes. Little can be done pending a thaw.

A Woman in the Case. Qvesec, Feb. 13. To-night Mr. Leclerk was informed that & man named Person was driving about town with the former's wife,and immediate- ly started in pursuit. He finally found them together in a cutter, and high words ensued. Leclerk drew a knife and plunged into Person’s heart, killing him instantly. Leclerk and wife have been arrested, the latter as 4 witness. Work Resumed. CorNwai., Feb. 13, After fours weeks strike, work was re- sumed this morning in the Canada and Stormont Cotton Company’s Mills, satis- factory arrangements with the strikers hav- ing been effected by which they are to get the highest wages paid in cotton mills in Canada. The strikers numbered 700, but 1500 people are employed in the mills,
