For the fiscal year ending Jane 1879, our imports were £51,964,427, and our exports $71,491,255, making our total volume of trade $153, 400,009 with a balance agaist us of S10,- 473,000. For the fiscal year just ended, our imports, as will be seen, have been 372,364, - 249, and our exports $85,274.979, making the total velume of trade $157,539,000, with a balance in our favor of no less than $12,5!0,- 000. ‘Thus, for the first time in our history, we have the balance of trade in our favor: but it has certainly been turned in a most satisfactory manner. Instead of buying $10,- 473,000 worth moro than we sold, we have this year sold nearly $13,000,000 worth more than we bought, making a change of over $23,- 000,000 in our account with the outside world in ope year.

Analyzing the fignres we find the compari- sons still more satisiactory. Our importations during the past year have been more largely of raw material, and Jess of the products of foreign labor. This is particularly noticeable in sugar, but it is also apparent in séveral other articles which we are now manufactur- ing for ourselves, Our exports, too, reveal a amarked improvement. for the year ending June, 1879, we exported, of ‘‘ the produce of Canuda,” goods to the value of $60,000,000. The past year we exported goods of the same character to the value of $70,000,000, which indicates a remarkably rapid development of the productive powers of the country. Inthe matter of manutactured goods alone, we have increased our exports over $500,000, or nearly twenty per cent, In other matters we have made like advances and exhibited equally prosperous symptoms,”

S1n,—I desire te direct the attention of the City Fathers and Health Officer to the foul state of the premises adjoining some oi the sity slanghter houses. A shower of rain is generally supposed to clear the atmospliere, but, unfortunately, such is not always the ease. For instance, there is a slaughter house on King street, where filth and foul matter accuimulate in such quantities that the least shower of rain causes :t to overflow, and after elowly meandering through several adjacent yarcs, this filth comes out on Water S'reet, poisening the atmosphere and almost stifling the unfortunate inhabitants. As I write, that part of Water street, between Muarphy’s corner and the EXAMINER Office, is almost im- passible owing to the foul smells. The im-

C., N. 8., commencing Saturday, August 2ist, 1880, at 10 e clock, a.m. The Constitu tion provides that each of the Associated Baptist Churches in the Maritime Pro- vinces contributing towards the objects of the Convention, shall be entitled to send one of its members to represent it at any meeting of the Convention, and an addi tional delegate for every twenty dollars so contributed ; no church, however, being entitled tesend more than five delegates,

But the depression, if it has not whelly disappeared from the British Isles, is fast vanishing from them ; and in a shert time it may be heped that the old prosperity will have largely, if not entirely, returned there. Times during the depression were tolerably hard in Canada, but not in our judgment nearly as trying as in either Great Britain or the United States. Here the depression at its worst stage coincided with the effect of one of the most dreadful calamities that ever visited any community. St. calainitous known to modern history. Had the times been ever so flourishing when that terrible conflagration laid so large a portion of St. John in ashes, its people weuld have felt the calamity deeply, could not have recovered from its effects but slowly. How- ever, as elsewhere, the depression is surely passing away from Canada generally. The accounts from the Upper Provinces are highly encouraging in almost every point of view, and at this: moment New Bruns- wick is a very fair country to livein. Its people are living in comfort and thriving. Matters are undeniably looking up in St. John. There is a decided business change for the better; and there seems reason to believe that the improvement will go on until the depression has wholly disappeared. —St. John News.
