A CONSTABLE was to-day tried before the Stipendiary Magistrate, charged with break ing the ‘‘ Act regulating the cost of distresses levied for payments of rents,” and a judgment was rendered to the effect that the said con- stable shall pay the sum of $9.36, as a com- pensation and satisfaction for the unlawful charges which he made under a distress for rent. This will be a lesson for many con- stables, who do not scruple to wring heavy fees under distresses

Island, shipped on board the brigt. “Siena,” which sailed from Halifax on the 8th, left the Sailors’ Home on Saturday morning, 6th inst., and has not been seen or heard of since. He is about 5 feet 6+ inches, reddish complexion, beard dark red, cut short; wore a Balmoral cap and blue top coat. He had no money when he leftthe Home. He arrived froin Liverpool, G. We have seldom enjoyed a more pleasant entertainment than we did last evening with the Scots, in the ‘‘Auld Kirk.” The pro- gramme wax good in every respect. As might be expect«:! in the songs, music and readings, Scotch predominated, and, if we were to judge by the «ppreciation with which they were receive) ‘y a crowded andience, we would almost say the entertainment surpassed any other of the same kind ever given on the Island. ‘I’o particularize any of the pieces is beyond our power; but, when we mention thenames of Mrs. Strickland, Misses Lea, Rankin, (ay anagh, Weeks, etc.; Messrs. Dear Srr,—When dry goods are im- ported into Torento, Montreal, Quebec, St. John, Halifax, or other large plaees in the Dominion, the Custom authorities take one out of every five or ten packages for examination and appraisement. Here in Charlottetown every package has to be opened, examined and appraised by the Customs. I need not dwell on the trouble and inconvenience thus occasioned. Every importer here can speak of that feelingly ; but I would ask, why should Charlottetown merchants be subjected: to so much more treuble and loss of time than merchants elsewhere ! :

The time for importations to arrive will soon be here. Will none of the leading houses takes the necessary steps to have themselves relieved from the exceptional and obnoxious rules enforced by the Cus- toms authorities} Snrely the merchants here are as reliable and trustworthy as anywhere else.
