A Royal Welcome

The visit this afternoon of His Royal High- ness, the Duke of Kent, is naturally the subject of the kceucst interest and enthusiasm. The details of the progrztmnie, starting with the ar- rival of the ducal [lélfly at the airport and cul- minating with the Government dinner this eve- ning, have appeared in the press. From the stand- point of the public, chief interest centres on the route which the cars will take from the air- port to the Provincial Building, the ceremony in the Confederation Chamber, and the Duke's ap- pearance on the balcony. These opportunities for seeing and welcoming the Royal visitor will likely occur between 6.30 and 7.30 p. m.

It is to be hoped that the weather will prove more favorable than on the occasion of Their Majesties’ visit, which however could not be sur- passed so far as public enthusiasm was concern- ed. Of one important detail we are assured by Group Captain fllake. R. A- F., who is in charge of the programme. The cars conveying the ducal party will proceed through the streets st a mod- erate rste of speed, between fifteen and twenty miles per hour, so that there will be no disap- pointment on the part of spectators in this re- gard.

His Highness has been flattering in hls com- ments on those parts of Canada which he has al- ready seen. The best has been reserved for the concluding days of his tour. The excellent op-

ortunity he will have of seeing Prince Edward Island from the air and from his car drive through Charlottetown and surrounding areas, will undoubtedly convince him that we have, as the late Lord TWCCdSmUIF assured us, s most de- lectable place in which to live.

The fact that our fair Island has been named after a former Duke of Kent, father of the pres- ent Duke's illustrious great-grandmfifllflf. QUE" Victoria, will also help to impress this visit fav- orably upon his memory.

Our citizens are not unmindful of the fact that His Highness’ mission is an official one, and that as Commodore of the Royal Air Force he is par- ticularly interested in the great Commonwealth Air Tr ining Plan which will be one of the chief factor in defeating Hitler and restoring world peace and security.

Restrictions on private consumption for the benefit of our war aims are to be increased. The new curb will include the banning of electric window displays, large electric signs, and even to a cut 1n street lighting. With regard to gaso- lene, the controller, not satisfied with the vol- untary economics has resorted to cutting down pupplies to gar stations. If this does not succeed it is possible the drivers of cars will have to carry rationing cards, for the government is com- pelled to effect an important saving in gasoline because of the serious cut in supplies and lack of transportation facilities for the crude oil.
