Financial Aid

As I promised last week, this column is aimed at students who are interested in graduate studies for September, 1986. As we all know, graduate studies mean money and money means getting busy and applying for scholarships, bursaries, fellowships and grants early. Now that I have made the point that we must do things early I’ll get on with it.

A few tips in aiding you in your search for the big bucks area: 1. Write touniversities you are interested in and ask about their ﬁnanCial aid services to graduate students 2. Check bulletin boards around campus for notices of awards, especially in the department you are interested in. Talk to the chairmen of departments who many have information about the fields you are interested in 3. Check the financial aid files in the Department of Student Services and/ or consult with the financial aid advisor as to what is available. '

Many of the deadlines for graduate studies are in the fall for the following year’s study, so get on the ball early and don’t miss out.

I would be more than happy to help anyone, as much as I can, with their search for the big bucks. I can be found at the Department of Student Services on the first floor of "Main Bldg. at the following times or by calling 566—0488:

(3) FREIDA CREELMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded to a female student in the creative arts —- music, art, drama or writing who demonstrates both ability and need for assistance. The scholarship is valued at $300.00. DEADLINE: October 15, 1985 ST. ANDREW’S SOCIETY BURSARY This bursary is awarded to freshman and sophomore students who are Catholic Islanders with Scottish ancestry or Scottish surname. DEADLINE: October 15, 1985 U.P.E.I. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to full-time senior students who have demonstrate both financial need and good academic performance. Each award is valued at $500.00. DEADLINE: Noon —— October 15, 1985

CAREERS WITH GOVERNMENT OF CANADA

Careers Public Service Canada book and application forms are available at this ofﬁce in Main Building. Deadline for application is November 1, 1985. Students who select FI, Financial Administration, as one of their career areas must write the FI test, which will be held on Thursday, November 7th, 1985, at 7:00 p.m. in Kelley 211.

A session on “Improving Your Job Chances” will be held in Main 01 at 2:30 p.m./7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8th, 1985.

CANADA PLACE VANCOUVER —— Applications for Host/Hostess for Canada Place Vancouver are being ac- cepted. Term is from April 7, 1986 - October 13, 1986. Deadline is October 16, 1985.

A rather interesting inci- dent took place last Thurs- day regarding The Netted Gem. Some people (who must of been silly to do such a thing, but of course if you can’t be silly at University where can you?) inserted photocopied pamphlets into the distributed papers. The material contained in these pamphlets would most prob— ably be considered unworthy of any university newspaper.

Oh, by the way, I feel that I should also mention (espe- cially to those concerned) that is was a highly illegal act and is now in its last stages of investigation before charges may be laid.
