RESPECT DAY - Volunteers Needed

Some of you may recall that for the last two years a well organized event was held on campus called RESPECT DAY. This event was considered very successful and worthwhile, as it was a concrete reminder to us all how important it is to take time to reflect on; - my own value as a person

- the value of others

- acknowledgement of individual differences making us no less equal to one another

- encouraging open-mindedness and non-judgemental attitudes about individual lifestyles

- adopting an attitude change especially towards a more positive approach

- participating in activities that nurture love of self and others.

Theeventis initiated by the counselling divisionof STUDENT DEVELOPMENT but was effectively and efficiently managed by reliable student volunteers.

Once again we would like to have another RESPECT DAY and will need some volunteer help to make it successful. Other years it was organized by the Peer Helper group, but our pool of Peer Helpers has diminished considerably, and we are looking for any students who wish to get involved in this worthwhile event.

We have decided the date will be MARCH 12, and will be actively recruiting some people to help out. We really hope you will want to take on this worthwhile project which won’ttake up too much ofyour time, but will return to you many satisfying good feelings. We would like you to give us a hand, and invite you to drop in to STUDENT DEVELOPMENT inthe Robertson Library and signup, or contact Marion Basha or Mary Johnston-Hunter at 566-0443.

Our first meeting is on February 14 @ 1:30 in the Learning Assistance Centre at Student Development in the Robertson

Library.

The final deadline for yearbook submissions is Friday, Febru- ary 21/97 at4:00pm. This is the last day of classes before Spring Break so be sure to have your submissions dropped off before the holiday. Specifically, we need the following submissions:

Leave it to a UPEI graduate to challenge commonly accepted perceptions about the past on PEI. Dr. Matthew Hatvany, a 1989 honours history graduate from UPEIL, will be taking a long look at the commonly-held perception that the burden of rent and lease was overwhelming, and placed great hardship on all of the tenantry in Prince Edward Island during the colonial period. Contrary to popular historical versions of that time, Dr. Hatvany will present a very different picture; one where lease or rental arrangements varied significantly accord- ing to the individual social and economic circumstances of each tenant family.

Dr. Hatvany, who is currently a post-doctoral fellow in historical geography at Laval University, will present his lec- ture: ''The Burden of Rent? Myth and Reality" in the Irving Chemistry Centre Lecture Theatre, on Wednesday, February 19th at 7:30 pm. His presentaion is being sponsored during Heritage Week by the History Department and the Institute of Island Studies. A reception and book display will follow and everyone is welcome.

ATTENTION SENIOR CLASS

Just a reminder to all graduates that every second Tues- day we will be having Senior Class Meetings. They will be held in Main 311 from 5:30 - 6:30pm. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday January 28, 1997. At this meeting we will be discussing the location and specifics of the senior class trip. Anyone interested in going on the trip should come to the meeting and give us ideas on destinations. We will also be discussing Senior Week activities.
