But this possession of truth was not enough by itself for the Apostles, and so the Holy Spirit filled them with love. And the world needs this Divine love of charity no less today. supernatural love —— in I word, holiness—is at once the foundation and crown of the Christian and of his contri- button to his brother. . As Jacques Msritain has said: "The first thing which the world needs is the contemplation and love of the saints, for it causes the gifts of divine life and love to intiiidate the word." If the truth in possession of the Christian is to bear its full fruit. it must. be united with love and be shared out of a love not swayed by emotion btit rooted in the single- minded pursuit of God and His Will, "Come. Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful. Enkindle in them the fire of Thy love," I 0 0 But to live according to the ll'\lIl’l in love is not always easy —--lf‘l(lP€d, it rarely is, And so the Holy Spirit filled the Apos- tles with fortitude, that they might be uncompromising in their procla- mation of Divine Truth. generous ;n their chitrity. The Spirit of God is still among us. working in the souls of men. If He appears to work more in secret, His presence is none the less .1 fact. It remains for us to remm'e the obstacles to His power in our lives. The world needs this presence, for it needs truth and love and fortittide. As a modern spiritual writer has summarized it, "Because He is the Spirit of truth. this Consoler a.-suages the needs of our intelligence; because He is the Spirit of love. He satis- fies the desires of our heart; be- cause He is the Spirit of strength. He sustains us in our toils, trials and tears." ,

since real education should be practical enough to prepare stu- dents to make a life as well as a living, it is not surprising that many educators have tried for years to Change the patterns of teaching so that pupils will get more than just the general educa- tion which has been given perhaps too exclusively in the past, To this and, manual or vocational educa- tion, as well as religious and char- acter-bulldlng training, are be- coming a part of some school sys- tems.
Such courses have played a mit- jor role in helping students to find their best suited life work and to prepare them for it by giving them actual experience in the use of their hands. Also religious and character training have brought a- bout fine results wherever such courses have been taught.

For example. back in 1928, a per- plexed group of Birmingham_ Ala- bama, citizens got together for the purpose of trying to slam a very strong tide of Juvenile delinquency. During the meeting somebody made the suggestion that their public schools should devote some time to character education.
The suggestion was acted upon, and a school program was built around 12 character development factors. namely: service, work, health. sportsmanship. thrift, beau- t_v, courtes_v, self-reliance, love of nature, scientific curiosity, co-op- eratton. and the worthy use of leisure. Each of the 12 factors was singled out for special emphasis, both in and out of classrooms. for a period of one year.
Newspaper editors, clergymen, and parent-teacher groups in the city did what they could to keep the venture green.
In connection with the charac- ter-b_uilding program, the students were requested and encouraged to help their parents and neighbors about their homes. They were ask- ed to work together in keeping the school rooms and grounds in apple pie order.
Banking and budgeting groups were organized by students as a part. of the thrift-teaching pro- ject, and as a result during 5 de- lJF°~'5l0|l years school bank depos- its were doubled.
Indeed, the scheme has worked so well that the whole city of Birmingham has now become character-minded. In 15 years Ju- venile crime dropped 30%.
If character building oourses could be introduced into our ad- ucational system it should bring very worthwhile results.

The other fellow who never touches it has equally convincing proof that we would be better without it. So, each in his own opinion goes his own way and the issue remains a stalemate. Actually. the drinker thinks only of himsclf and the non-drinker is too complacent in his own strength.
A reasonable decision and Christ- ian attitude towards these two is- sues should be on the side of to- tal abstinence, and, if the Church is the greatest institution within
