The islender, however, says—and let \¢ be always understood that the paper edited by the Colonia! Secretary speaks the senti- ments of the Government on this subject—that no matter what the award way be, it will be optional with the proprie- tars to aceept er reject it —that che tities being confirmed, it will rest exclusively with the proprietors to say whether they will eell their lands at any pice, and whe her they will for- give any arrearsof rent. There are about forty persons who style themselves proprietors of township lands in this Island. Out of that number only five have agreed to the appointment of the Commission, —the remaining thirty five will not ac- knowledge the authority of the Commission,—-the head officer of the Government says they are not only right in refusing to recognize ap institution which the Government are taking im- amense credit to thememselves for establishing, but that the recusant prop tictors will resist te award, if it be unfavour- able to them, and that in their resistance they must be sup- ported by the Government of Britain!

Now, if these be the views of the Government of this Island and there is no duubt that they were well considered in Council before the Clerk of the Faceutive was author zed to put them in bisck and white—it is very clear that the Com- mission .was intended from the first to bea huge piece of deception ou the tenantry, and an engine for strengthening the claims of the preprietary party. We readily admit, dowever, that we do not regard t))¢ Commissioners as a party to the deception. Wehave no dou t they will discharge their duty c nscientiously, and with the conviction that their deci- sion will be final and binding on «1! parties™ The Government here, however, says, through its accredited organ, that it will ®Setiading only so far as it confirms proprietary titles,—that if it shall go beyond this point—adjudge the terms on which proprietors shall sell their lands—define what amount of arrears shall be forgiven, and that in doing so the wishes of the proprietors should not be carried out—they will then “* gestst’’ the action of the Commissioners, and call upon the British Government to interfere in their behalf.
