Coza.—In reply to a question from Lord Brougham, ‘the Marquis of Lansdowne said the piratical expedition to Cuba had been undertaken not only without the sanction, but against the strict prohibition of the Ame- rican Government; and he had not the least doubt that that Government had done all that lay in its power to prevent it.—The Earl of Aberdeen was satisfied of the sincerity of the Government of the United States, but he regretted that when he himself had proposed, twenty years ago, that England, France, and America, should

He deelined to answer the question relative to what instructions had been sent out to our naval commander upon the West India seas.—-Lord Stanley insisted upon being informed whether any instructions had been sent out at all.—Earl Grey declared it would be a breach of duty on the part of the Queen’s ministers to give the answer further than that the matter was under their

~- consideration. After a short conversation, the question

was not further pressed, and the subject dropped. The house adjourned at five minutes past six o’clock.

lvaty.—The Pope has published his “ harangue” in explanation of the startling events of his reign: and commenting on the affairs of the Roman Catholic world. He specially stigmatizes the persecution of the Archbishop of Turin by the Piedmontese government. He expresses his grief that Catholicism should be “ me- naced” in the kingdom of Belgium. His Holiness has decided on the merits of two candidates for canoniza- tion; viz., Peter Claver, a Jesuit Missionary, who died two hundred years ago, and whose beatification the Pope declared might be eafely proceeded with, since his virtues and miracles were clearly established; and Germaine Cousin, a secular virgin, a shepherdess, born at Pibrac, in the Diocese of Toulouse, in the year 1579, whose theological and cardinal virtues his Holiness pro- nounced to be so evidently proved, that the discussion of the four miracles said to be wrought by her might safely come on.

SUPREME COURT.

The June Term of the Supreme Court commenced yesterday. The following gentlemen were sworn in as Grand Jurors :—W. Cundall, Foreman, James Warren, Martin Dogherty, Joseph Holroyd, Peter Macgowan, Daniel Davies, Robert Hutchinson, H. D. Morpeth, H. W. Lobban, Ewen McMillan, Henry Haszard, Thomas Dawson, Joseph McDonald, Robert Longworth, A. H. Yates, John C. McDonald, George Hooper, Kenneth McKenzie, T. B. Tremain, E. L. Lydiard, R. Faught, John Trenaman, Richard Heartz.

His honor the Carer Justice briefly but lusidly charged the Jury. He directed their attentlon to several cases of larceny on the calendar—alluded to the several cases of stabbing, a crime which, he regret- ted, had become too prevalent of late, that required their earnest consideration, and his Honor commented particularly on the case of Beaton, in which death ensued. The Chief Justice coneluded his charge by exhorting the Grand Jury to diligence in the discovery of unlicenced dealers in spirituous liquors, describing the habitations of such persons as being, in too many cases, the haunts of vice, and the sources whence épring the most deplorable evils to society.

The Court adjourned at an early hour yesterday,— reveral causes, of minor interest, were, however, dis- posed of—his Honor the Assistant Judge presiding.

Temrerance of this Island, will take place (D. V.) on FRIDAY, the 28th day of JUNE, instant, (the Anniversary of the Coronation of Her most Gracious Majesty Queen VicTrorRia,) at which the Sons of Temperance in the neigh- ing Colonies are respectfully invited to attend.

Divine Service will be held in St. Paul’s Church, at 11 o’clock, A. M., and a Temperance Sernion will be preached by Rey. D. FitzGerald, Chaplain of the Victoria Division.
