quite satisfied either with the formation of

the Goverment or with its policy as an- nounced, The Pull Mall Gazette says ; Only a few days ago we saw the forma- tion of what looked like the strongest Gov- ernment of our generation. The majority in the House of Commons was greater than Sir Robert Peel's in 18#l, and almost as great as Ear! Grey's in 1832. The general feeling of the country was confident and enthusiastic. The Minister who wielded this majority is the most experienced commandiny statesman in the House of Commons. What hashappened? The ink on the patents appointing the Ministers is hardly dry before the Ministers vrows become clouded with anxiety. Elation

known. The Opposition, instead of being cowed and modest, are. fherce, bitter and pertinacious. Fouts, gibes and sneers are launched upon the Mimisters, as if they were on the eve of defeat and not on the morrow of victory. On their own benchest there is a curious feeling of un- easiness, perplexity and {disapoiniment. There is loyalty and zaal in unexampled strength, but for the moment it looks rather like loyalty balked and zeal in the atr. Ba- fore the werking session was # week old a mutinous roundrobin had, in a few hours, been signed by more than a fourth of the party. The mutineers wore by no means confined to the regulation malcontents be- low the gangway, but sprang from all sec- tions of the party. Outside of Parliament it is undeniable that the same clouds have arisen. A chill has come upon men’s minds—a sense of check, chagrin and suspicion that the chiefs they have laced in power may not after all ave understood the wishes and inten- tions of those who placed them there. The peril of the Cabinet lies is the fact that it was not formed to match that spirit in the country which: made a Liberal Government possible. Its predominant color is not: the predominant color of the party. This is the real secret of the present uncomfortable and uusaf@ position of affairs. For the present @veryhedy will be anxious to make the best 6fhings. More careful attention to the real significance of the elections and a vigorous aud resolute adherence to prin- ciple may soon restore more genial rela- tions. Mf not, we shall have the vexation of seeing the opportunity which might have marked a rea!ly great expansion of liberal- isin degraded into a mere shifting of posi- tion in eternal seesaw of inns and outs.

The 2nd wonthly shooting match of No. 3 (Captain Longworth’s) Company of the 82nd battalion, Royal Canadian Militia, for the company’s silver medal, was completed yesterday afternoon, at the Kensington Range. The ranges were 200, 500 and 609 yards, fseven shets at each, with one sighting shot. Captain F. 8. Longworth was again successful, winning the medal the second time, with a score of 72. The wea- ther was very unfavorable, and at the long range (owing ts the ever varying and gusty winds) it was impossible to secure a high score. The medal is of a design and pattern quite handsome, and we are inclined to think that the good shots of Captain Long- worth’s Company had better look to their laurels else they may find in him «@ steady marksman hard to overcome. We are authorized to state that the third monthly competition for the medal, will ba on Thursday, the first of July, and should the day prove unfavorable, on the following: Monday.

In this connection we are pleased to per- ceive a rifle Batt in course of erection at Kensington Range. at the distance of 800 yards, thus for the first time affording a fair oppertunity to our Island riflemen of practising with the Martini-Henry and other small bore long range rifles. This supplies a want long felt by our marksmen, and although a late one, is an appreciated anvantage. Gradually, we think, our active militia may enjoy advantages for years past taken as matters of course in the sister provinces of the Dominion.

A Boavs Marriage Norice.—The A. C. Advertiser says: We are extremely sorry to learn that some malignant scoundrel has perpetrated another of those periodical out- rages inflicted on society, by sanding us a bogus marriage notice of Mr. Angus alc- Lean, of Bleck Bush, Lot 46,—which we published two years ago. The notice in question was the work of some malicious creature, who will, in all probability, suffer the penalty incurred sooner than he expects. It would be a fearful thing if such fiends were not Cetected and drummed out of the’ country. By publishing this contradiction, such of our contemporaries as have pub- lished the noticé referred to, will only ac- cord simple justice to a highly respectable

Davies, a gentleman who has much experience in hotel business in this and other cities, and who endeavors at all times to give the public the benefit of that experience. In the ‘ Rankin” there are over fifty commodions sleeping apartments, several parlors and receptions rooms, be- sides sample rooms for the convenience of commercial travellers. The tables are fur- nished with all the delicacies of the season, and the charges are very moderate. We would advise visitors to give Mr. D. a call. THE REVERE HOUSE

is another of our popular hotels. It hasa very central situation, and‘is just the place for those who are desirious of obtain- ing comfortable and convenient lodgings at cheap rates. Attached tothe hotel are ex- tensive stables in charge of experienced hostlers. ‘* Rocklin House” teams are 4l- ways in waiting at the steamboats and trains.

WAGSTAPF'S HOTEL is well conducted, and has for its patrons some of the best people who visit the Prov- ince. It is located in an excellent position, close tu the leading thoroughfares and the principal business houses in the city. It is well known as a commercial hotel, and has for its proprietor William Wagstaff, a man of much experience. We will attend to suburban and sea-side hotels to-morrow.

Information Wanted. To any Editor at Charlottetown, Prince Ed- ward Island.

Mr. Eptror,-—I wish to place in your hands a little information ascertained last fall by me, to this effect :—

Some number of years ago,a man on your Island was robbed of an amount of money by a gipsey woman. It appears there were two women and a man, with nothing distinct about their manners or methed. That the women robbed the man and fled to Canada. I know where there isa man who robbed—or rather his wife robbed -a man somewhere in the Lower Provinces. The name of the loser I know not, but the real name of the robber | do know. However, a daughter of this gipsey woman swindled a man in one of the coal mines in Nova Scotia ont of some .money last year, whose name was McKay, or Mc- Kie, or Mykie—or some such a name—who was a nephew to the one her mother rob- bed on the Island years ago, and this is all the clue I can give, beyond that it oceurred somewhere between 1863 and 1865. Now, if the loser will give me a true account of it, and wishes them arrested, let him or

Tur Louise Leighton Opera Co. gave two performances in Liverporl this week, both of which were well attended. It is not often thata first-class company visits us and the rich treat given by this company was therefore a most unexpectet pleasure. Sullivan's Comic Opera, H. M. 8. Pinafore was rendered in a most masterly manner. We are aware of the many disadvantages under which a travelling troupe labors, The scenery and other stage

were unavoidably absent, but this deficiency was soon forgotten in the fine acting and in the best singing ever heard in Liverpool. We cannot but speak in the highest terms of the acting and singing of Mr. Pyke, who in the part of Capt. Corcoran, fully sustained his reputation as a first-class artist. Mr. Eckert, a8 Ralph Rockstraw and Mrs. Eckert (Louise Leighten,) in the vole of Josephine, left noth- ing to be desired ; Mrs. Pyke, as little But- tereup, did splendidly and was warmly ap- plauded. Dick Deadeye (Mr. Neary) de. serves special mention for his fine rendering of a most difficult part ; and the superior acting of Mr. Troulon, as Sir Joseph Porter, was much and deservedly admired. We hope that this Company will tind it convenient to make u3 another visit soon.-— Liverpool Times. —1

The Princess Louise and Prinee Leepold did not, as expected, leave Toronto on Monday for Chicago. Instead they spent that day in Toronto sight-seeing, several hours of the day having been devoted to an examination of the General Hospital. The Princess is said to have done the institution very thoroughly—exploring every ward, visiting every bed, conversing wore or less with every sufferer, patting and petting the little patients and speaking gently and soothingly to the older ones. Her offorts appear to have been well seconded by the young Prince, whom she introduced to some of the patients as her brother Leo- pold. The Canadian people, without dis- tinction, note with pleasure these womanly ministrations at the couch of suffering and sorrow on the part of the Queen’s daugh- ter and the Governor-General’s wife, On Tuesday the Princess and her brother visit- ed Niagara. Thence they were te set out for Chicago and Milwaukee. ‘The San Francisco excursion appears to have been given up. The royal tourists may look in on the Chicago Convention before its chief work is accomplished.
