Conference opened at 9a. m. with the Rev. H. P. Cowperthwaite, A. M., retiring President, in the chair, <A prayer meeting was conducted until 10 a. m. After sing- ing, the 19th psalm was read by the Secre- tary, then followed prayer by Revs. H. Daniel, S. H. Rice, Dr. Stewart. J Com- bree, Douglas Chapman, Dr. Inch and C. Combree, The prayers were interspersed with suitable hymns.

At 10 a. m. Dr, Carman, General Super- intendent, took the chair. The roll was called, and 57 ministers and 20 laymen answered to their names. The laymen present from the Isiand are Messrs. Wm. Heard, Warren J. Muller, George M. Clarke and Frederick Essery. Dr. H. Sprague was elected President by a large mjority on a first ballot. Rev. T. Mar- shal was re-elected Secretary on a first ballot by a large majority. Rev. J. Crisp and G. W. Fisher were appointed Assistant Secretaries.

If we are to have drunkards in the future, some of them. are to come from the boys to whom I am now writing; and I ask you again if you want to be one of them? No! of course you don’t! Well, 1 have a plan for you that is just as sure to save you from such a fate 23 the sun is to rise to-morrow to-morrow norning. It never failed; it will never fail; and I think it worth know- ing. Never touch liquor in any form. That is the plan, «nd it is not only worth knowing, but is worth putting into practice. I know you don't drink now, and it seems to you as if you never would. But your temptation will come, and it probably will come in this way: You will find yourself sometime with a number of companions, and they will have a bottle of wine on the table. They will drink, and offer it to you. They will regard it as a manly practice, and very likely they will look upon you asa milksop if you don’t indulge with them. Then what will you do? eh, what will you do? Will you say, ‘‘Ne, no! none of that stuff for me! I know a trick worth half a dozen of that!” or will you take the glass, with your own common sense protest- ing and your conscience making the whole draught bitter, and a feeling that you have damaged yourself, and then go off with a hot head and a skulking soul that at once begins to make apologies for itself, and will keep doing so all its life? Boys, do not become drunkards.—Dr. Holland.

Fortunes Wrecked.

If a censuus could be taken of those who have wrecked their own fortunes by profigacy, intemperance, or ex(ravagance, the result would be a wretched reflection upon human morality, and would show that without the life of the Gospel there is no health, or hope, or help in man to save himself. A visitor in a British workhouse saw at one table two clergymen who both held University degrees. Then, near these clerical wrecks where two qualified medical raen. Next to them sat a pauper who was formerly war correspondent to the London Daily paper which is supposed to be the most popular journal in England. By his side sat one who had once been a Poor Law Guardian in that very union. All this was told the other day in a meet- ing in London. We know it is but a sample of what might be proclaimed. It is clear that the rich need the Gospel, not of mere fashionable formalism, but of the plain New Testament, rung into their ears.

Temperance Netes.

The stomach that is tickled with a glass of beer at the age of 18, at the age of 25 requires a glass of strong liquor to satisfy it. An Ohio lady was asked what could be done with the corn produced in that State for distilling purposes in case of prohibi- tion, and aptly replied that it would serve a better purpose in the manufacture of starch wherewith to stiffen the backs of weak-kneed temperance men>

The Graphic publishes the following facts in regard to smoking : ** An English phys:- cian has been investigating the effect of smoking on boys. He took for his purpose thirty-eight boys, aged from nine to fifteen, and careful y examined them. In twenty- seven he discovered injurious traces of the habit. In :wenty-two, there were various disorders of the circulation and digestion, palpitation of the heart, and more or less taste for strong drink. In twelve there were frequentiy biee@ings of the nose, ten had disturbed sleep, and twelve had slight ulceration of the mucous membrane of the mouth, which disappeared on ceasing the use of tobacco for some days. The doctor treated thei all for weakness, but with little effect until the smvuking was discon- tinued, when health and strength were soon restored.
