THE LIBERALS AND PROTECTION

Ix convention assembled at Ottawa (1893) the Liberal party declared :

“We denounce the principle of protec- tion as radically unsound and unjust to the masses of the people, and we declare our convictions that any tarff changes based on that principle. must fail to af- ford any substantial relief from the bvur- dens under which the country labors. This iesue we unheritatingly accept, and upon it we await with the fullest confi- dence the verdict of the electorate of Canada.” j

At the same convention Sir Wilfrid Laurier said :

“We will tax for revenue, but not one cent for protection, Taxation is an evil that nothing but the requirements of the Government can justify. When we are in power-and I don’: want to sell the skin of the bear until the bear is shot; yet I think the Tory bear is about to be axinned—we will free the people from protection,which is @ fraud, a delusion and arobbery. For it is roobery to take money from one man aud give it to another.”

Speaking at Newmark-t, Sir Wilfrid sid :

“T will mot besatiefied unti] the last vestige of protection has been removed from tbesoil of Canada. Our great re- form is to put away from the soil of Can= aia the last vestige of protection.”

In the course of his numerous address- es to the people Sir Louis Davies said :

“We bave been attacking this policy year by year. This isan accursed rys- vem, a system accursed of God and map.”

Sir Richard Cartwright said :

‘*] say Our protective system was 8 auge miciake, in +o far as it was honest atuil, aod in so far as it was not honest it was a buge scheme of robbery.”

And again Sir Rivbard eaid :

** Our policy from first to Jast has been

to destroy the villaincus system of protec- tion by free trade, areyenue tariff or con< tinental free trade.” Notwithstanding these statements and thousands of others, made by the sanre geatlemen aod their partizans to the same effect, the tariff of Canada is, in principle, as protective as it ever was,—it is to all interesta and purposes a protective tariff; — aud judging of the future by the past it is likely to remain so, The Liberals have stolen the Conservatives’ Protection clothes and, in our opinion—we may be wrong— they intend to keep the Conservative Pro- tection clothes on.

“Tue Examiner makes out the* the western farmers are being pandered to fcr political purpeses aod P. K. Island farm ers neglected. The Northwest Farmer, publisneed at Winnipeg wholly in the in- terests of the farmers ofthe West, and undoubtedly the finest agricultural paper published in the west ot Canada, views the matter of thi: shipment of 190 car- loads of binder twine in quite a different light from Tae Examiner. This is what it says editorially in che last issue received ut this office : —

“This twine isto be distributed over the country and sold at actual cost by agents of the Department of Agriculture. The Farmer is in full accord with the principle upon which the government is acting in giving the farmers the twine at actual “cost. We think, however, that the government has]jchosen an inopportune time to start this innvovation* * * * Implement men feel much iniurei by this action of the government, and es- pecially so this year, when Owing to the drouth they will not be able to sell one-haif the supply they have laidinto meet the

regular crop without this extra competi» tion.’

So it appears dhat the government has blundered in thie as in other matters. We may be sure that here would be no com- plaints of this kind if a fair porportien of the government’s twine had been sent to the Maritime Provinces and sold at cost price—n®o complaints, at least, on the part of the farmers now compelled to pay 24 cents per pound for twine made in the United States. Perhaps the manufactur» ers in the States might enter a protest. But we shou!du% mind that.

—It is stated that 7,000,000 buehels of cern were shipped into Canada during the yesr ended June 30, 1899; ard we have no doubt than an equal quantity,orevena greater quartity, was imported from the States last year. 1s it wonderfnol that our farmers cannot get a price for their oats in their home markets, and the neighboring provincee,and thatsubsidized steamers have to be obtained to carry oats to England?

The entire party was killed , wounded or captured.
