During last Wednesday’s SU meeting in the Pit, Janice Broderick read a letter she had received from John Crossley, Vice-President - Academic Support. In this letter, he attempted, inasad, father-like way, to dispel this horrible perception we have of a lack of communication between administration and students. Though many heard his words of wisdom, | could tell that most of the students present had great difficulty understanding the message behind it. Therefore, in the interest of facillitating discussion between students and the administration, | will now devote my mastery of the English language to translating the words of our dear VP

- Papa Doc.

Papa Doc: “I am wondering if we have a bit of a communication problem.”

Translation: “Why won’t anyone listen to me.”

Papa Doc: “People have been concerned about a rumoured closing of the Health Centre when this has never been anyone’s intention.”

Translation: “We were going to close the Health Centre, but it was never our intention

to get caught.”

Papa Doc: “It seems to me that students do not understand what the University hopes to achieve...”

Translation: “Students are stupid! Stupid, stupid, stupid! God, I hope they never figure out what we are trying to do to them.”

Papa Doc: “This year’s budget process should be at least as open, if not more open, than last year’s”

Translation: “Students should expect to get at least as screwed, if not more screwed, than last year.”

Papa Doc: “I would happily meet with you...to discuss any matter within my jurisdiction.” : Translation: “If you or anyone else can figure out what my jurisdiction is, please let me now.”

Now that we better appreciate your message, we can turn to the Student Union’s reply. It contains three very important points of which we all should be aware. First, “...I feel there has not been any mis-communication on our part.” Second, “The administration does not understand what students hope to achieve.” Finally, “We will be fully prepared to question the budget as we are presently questioning and breaking old rules with dignity.”

Incase you still find yourselfa little confused, Papa Doc, I will explain what we are trying to say. To start with, we say exactly what we mean. We are not old enough to have mastered the art of political BS. Next, you have no idea of where we are coming from, of what our hopes and dreams are, or of the anxiety your policies put us through. You are so far removed from the lives of students that you might as well govern from another planet.

Finally, we will question your actions and we will question your motives. We willnotallow any more reductions in our essential services or a further degradation in the quality of our education. If this means we have to sign petitions, write letters, or even march on your office and the PEI legislature, then that is exactly what we are going to do. If you, Mah Epperly, and others in administration have difficulty understanding this, I will summarize in one word.

It is called communication, and it seems to be the only form you understand.
