An Anarchist Answered.
Sirk,—A subject like that of ‘ anarchy ” is one that should appeal to all classes, and when men deem it meet and just to come out in the pubhe press they should be care- ful how it is handled, for it is a subject which covers @ broad field, and has puzzled the brains of the greatest writers of the present day, if we are to judge by the numerous articles which have appsared in the leadiug magazines and newspapers of the civilized wozld.
Now, on reading the opinion of a gentle- man, published in a recent issne of THe Examiner, 1 may say that a little more study of the question, particularly the Homestead affair, would be a benefit to him and would place him in a far more favor- able light before the readers of that popular daily —Tue Examiner.

by saying that the Union workingmen de- nounced the action of Berkman as a wrong and foolhardy affair. Ifthe writer meant workivgmen not al‘ied with unions then he might be right in asserting that they yelled with joy.
The charge is made that if the class of people who comprise the Homestead strik- ers was in Mr. Frick’s place they would be given to more brutal acts. Well, they are not. and we cannot judge. But we can see how they acted under more trying circum- stances.
The Carnegie company, deeming it nec- cessary to make a reducuon in the wages paid to their employes, and knowing that said employes had in many cases become owners of their own homes and would, when such reduction be proposed, rebel, put their works in such a state of defence with an array of guns p2ering out of grim- lookiug port holes, reminding one of the side of H. M. S. Blake.
How did the strikers act? How would any man act if his home were attacked ? The Homestead strikers did not feel satis- fied that the reduction was fair. They ac- cordingly did not go to work, and did not attack the garrisoned forts of the great ‘philanthropist—Andrew Carnegie. The news spread abroad that an armed body of Pinkerton thugs were coming up the Mon- ongohela.
Was this a peaceful move ? No; and the Homestead people knew it, for many months before that day the news had trav- elled among the laboring people of America giving an account of the cruelties of the Finkertons at the N. Y. Central R. R. strike. Whenthe name of Pinkerton is spoken, the poor laborer shrugs his shoul- ders, but the Carnegie striker must do more and he did it. Certainly we will all con- done the barbarity practiced by a few of the irritated wives and motkers, but even that we can excuse Those poor, and I will say, for sake of argument, uneducated women, saw their husbands and sons strick- en down by the arms of those hirelings, and revenge, cruel revenge, was foremost in their minds.
I might go on, sir, giving in lengthy de- tail my objections to that part of the article dealing with the Homestead strike, but it is useless ; for I believe in my heart, with a few exceptions, the majority of your readers are in sympathy with the victims ot the Carnegie lockout.
I might say here that strikes are con- sidered foclish on the part of the man who strikes. The argument was given to me the other evening that the striker comes out the loser in nine cases out of ten. During the time that he is ‘out’ he is losing the wages that, if he had accepted at a reducad rate, he would be receiving. Granting that an employer proposes a re- duction, and said reduction be accepted without any trouble by the employes; in a year, say, « further decrease in wages is ween we might see the workingmen of the United States iaboring for a pittance equal to that of the European laborer. Now a union is formed among a cértain class mechanics—say the printers. They have oue of the best organizations in America, and have been in many fights, many of which resulted unsatisfactorily for the union. But ia all cases the owners have met the trouble with heavy losses, as is the case with all owners who have trouble with their help. If any reader wil] look at the reports »f the Board of Arbitrators in the different States or ue Uuivn, figures will show that it is not the few employes who reap the whirlwind.
If unions and strikes were not benefiting those who enter them, why is it that all manufacturers dread to have union men in their employ? Because they (the union men) want to be dealt with as men.
One reason why mos* strikes are unsuc- cessful is that the places, are -+pplied with men from «oth-- seuntries who are either ucvuid Of principle and will work for half wages, or are unacquainted with the ideas of unionism. But it is a never-failing theory that they are in a short time all ar- dent union men and fighting for rights which they krow they ought to have.
That is the exact case with the Home- /stead people. Only a few years ago they took the place of strikers, and we will see it repeated again and again.

Hardy Cherries
The Government Horticulturist, Mr. Craig, has addressed the following circular to pur. serymen and fruit growers:
“An important feature in connection with the Horticultural work, during the past five years, at the Central Experimental Farm, Ot- tawa, has been the testing of hardy forms of the Morello Cherry, recently imported from Eastern Europe. A number of these iow grow- ing, partially dwarfed varieties have been in bearing the past two years and give evidence of unusual hardiness, vigor and productive. ness. This apparent hardiness of tree united in many instances with good quality of fruit, renders it advisable that they should be dis. serrinated at as early a date as ible, es- pecially in the interests of the fruit growers in the colder parts of the Dominion.
“In order that Nurserymen and fruit grow. ers may have an opportunity for testing them without delay, a se‘ection including the most desirable varieties has been made, of which buds for immediate propagation are now avail- able, and wi!l be distributed under instruction of the Hon. The Minister of Agriculture free of che re, on receipt of the application by the undersigned.
‘Applications should be addressed to the Horticulturist, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, These will be filled in the order in which they are received, as far as it is ible to meet the demand, using our best judgment in selecting suitable varieties for the various sections.
‘Care should be taken to preserve the names, so that a record of the behaviour of each variety can be secured for the purpose of tuture comparison. Haying is about done now, and the return is very light, in consequence of which some of our leading farmers have to shorten their stock considerably. Messrs. Alex. and Ronald McEachern have already sold two horses, one of them being the finest ever sold in this county.
The postmaster, Mr. John McDonald, ex-J. P., is about having his house enlarged for the accommodation of travellers coming and going on the «xpress. The change of time has made it very inconvenient for passengers without a stopping place at Harmony.
We are sorry to learn that F. McVarish and Baaton were unable to fulfil their con- tract of lumber with James FitzPatrick, of New Harmony, last winter owing te the scarcity of snow, but now will be able to drive a quantity of it to F. McInnis’ mills with the preseut freshets. Mr. Mclunis is having his mills repaired and his staff of millers increased to help them out of their difficulty.
Philip Leslie is everlooking some blue- berry barrens in this vicinity with a view to cauning.

The commission appointed by the On- tario government to investigate the ques- tion of the dehorning of cattle has con- cluded its labors and are now drawing up a report. The anti-clerical demonsirations in Rome have alarmed the Vatican, and the Pope is about to send a note to Catholic states stating that the Italian Government puts no curb on the enemies of the church, and that he is more a prisoner than ever before, Advices received lately from Tashkend, a town of Asiatic Russia in Syr-Darya, are to the effect that the Chinese troops who recent. iy occupied various posts in the Pamira with-
