Tue Argus says: ‘* Mr. Alex, McKinnon made a witty point at Mr. Pope’s meeting on Friday night. He said that Mr. Pope did more than any other member in the House.of Commons, for he has ‘‘made the dumb io speak.’ He explained himself thus : Before Mr. Pope went to Ottawa, our representatives were silent. When Mr. Pope made his appearance in the Commons they became inspired, and now Mr. Pope never speaks without all the others follow- ing him.

THIS MORNING, at an early hour, one of our dry goods’ merchants entered his store on Queen Street, and, on looking in the usual manner, to see if all things were as he left them on the previous evening, he was strnek with astonishment to find that an en- ormous amount of goods were missing. His excitement became boundless; and, impressed with the idea that his premises had been. burglarized, proceeded with all Haste to the residence of the City Marshal and aroused him from his peaceful slumbers. He informed him that his store had been entered from the rear, and thattwelve coats, as many pairs of pants, several webs ‘of cloth, lenders, drawers unaccountable, had been taken. The Marshal examined the premises. No marks of the burglar were visible, save the missing goods. A cellar- hatch in the rear, was examined. It was not fastened, and it was evident that the bur-

lar effected his entrance through the hatch. Sutteeneal were immediately detailed to seek for the stolen property. All suspicious houses and localities were searched; but the search for the stolen goods appeared vain and unsuccessful. The search was diligent- ly prosecuted until nine o’clock, at which time the merchant arrived at the Police Station and informed the officers of a start- lingvelite, as follows :—“‘ That his clerk, on the previous evening, was preparing to receive new goods, and he placed all the issitig ‘property in a sécret apartment, | without making him (the merchant) aware of the fact.” Thus ended the champion

The statements that General Todleben is negotiating with the British Admiral Horn- by and the Porte, and that he has sent an ultimatum to the Porte, &c.. are contra- dicted.

Pending negotiations between St. Peters- burg and London, Todleben is not likely to adopt any course tending to create new com- plications.

Admiral Hornby, after spending three days with Minister Layard, returned to Ismalia yesterday.

His personal opinion is that he feels the fleet should not withdraw beyond Gallipoli.

The most important army corps in front of Constantinople is commanded by Baker Pasha, an Englishman.

Captain Manthrope, an Englishman, who is second in command of the Turkish fleet, has just received a decoration from the Sultan.

The statement that Admiral Hornby’s fleet is expected at Port Said is obviously premature:

A despatch from Constantinople says that Gen. Todleben is about to retire to the lines of Tehataldja, leaving a small force at San Stefano.

The Russians offer to fall back behind a straight line drawn between Dedicagatch and Adrianople, if the British fleet will withdraw at. the same time.

The ‘‘ Minnie Lanagan” sailed for St. John’s, N’fid, with a full cargo of potatoes.
