The earliest account of any aqueduct for conveying water is probably that which is given by Herodotus, who was born 484 Lb. C. He describes the mode in which an ancient aqueduct was made by Eupalimus, an architect of Megara, to supply the city of Samos with water. In the course of the aqueduct a tunnel, nearly a mile in length, was pierced through a hill, and a channel three feet wide made to convey the water.

Count Tolstoi, the celebrated Russian statesman and poet, who hae kept Nihilism at bay since the assassination of the late Emperor, has been declared incurably insane and placed in a lunatic asylum. Although the Couat is one of the richest men in Russia, he some time ago suddenly quitted St. Petersburg and retired to a remote estate, where he passed his time chiefly ia making boots and shoes, calling in as a teacher a young shoemaker who lived on the esiate. There he was visited by several literary aud social acquaintances, and to them he professed to have found the real secret of happiness and morality, viz, manual labor.

The course pursued by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, in paying back the money it borrowed from the Government, is what some of our neigh- bors on the other side of the line cannot understand. It fills them with wonder to see a railway corporation pay a debt due to the State. This is what the Pittsburg Despatch says about what it calls “ a paiufully un-American proceed. ing ”:—‘* A new departure in the line of trans-continental railways is reported from Canada, the enterprise which is striking out an origine! policy of its owa being the Canadian Pacific. Up to the present this company has been a rival of the United States lines in keeping strictly to the policy of taking all it could get from the Government and giving cothing back. It is now announced, however, that it wishes to pay back a loan of $5,000,000 whick it secured at the last session of the Dominion Parliament and get $8,000,000 of bonds which it had deposited as secur- ity. The purpose may not be entirely disinterested, but the departure from the policy of our great companies in not demandivg the bonds back without any psyment should make the Canadians thankful. On this side of the line the spectacle of a Pacific railway paying back to the Government anything is cal- culated to arouse a suspicion of lunacy. Sach a course would be apt to bamper the workings of the great vested inter- ests of watered bonds.”
