Math & CS Corner

While the rest of the cam- pus had only their studies and living expenses to concern them- selves with, several dedicated Math and Computer Science ma- jors attended two APICS confer- ences over the last two weeks. The Math conference was held on the weekend of October 27-28 at Mount Allison University. The Computer Science confernce was held this past weekend, Novem- ber 3-4.

The Math confeience began with a 3 hour problem-~solving competition on Friday afternoon, followed by a wine and cheese party held at an art gallery. I understand that the members came back with a more critical view of art, but other than that, the social was enjoyed. Later that evening, the Math depart- ment treated the UPEI delega- tion to a dinner at a local restau- rant. This was followed by a pub at the Mount A SUB at- tended by some of the delegation, while the rest toured the cam- pus. There was also some talk of a late night smelt—fishing expedi- tion that took place, but that ap- pears to be a private joke.

The next day, those that sur- vived the Pub, long with those who stayed in for the night, at- tended a number (1 or 27) of lec- tures, followed by a buffet lun- cheon where the winners were an- nounced. Unforuntately, none of the UPEI contingent was in the top three, but the competition was still considered to be enjoy- able by all who attended.

The conference attracted peo- ple from more than 9 universi- ties. Upei was represented by Micheal Easter, Terri Blanchard, Beryl Mallet, and Darren Gal- lant, and were accompanied by Professor Lowell Sweet, Profes- sor Winston Pineau, and Pro- fessor Patrice Sawyer, as well as a 3 member cheering section. The competition itself consisted of two events, a test for each in- dividual participant, and a team competition where groups of two participants worked together to solve problems. Both were, to say the least, challenging.

The CS half of the society also had their own APICS conference on the vertically inclined campus of UNB. The first part of the com- petition was held on the UPEI

campus on October 26 when each of the participants spent three hours attempting to complete two challenging problems. Of the 8 people who attempted this part, only one was able to complete even one of the programs.

The next part involved voy- aging to the mainland to write a 3 hour exam. The team ar- rived at the UNB campus just in time to start a three hour writ- ten test where each participant solved more programming prob- lems. This was follwed later by another wine and cheese so- cial, which provided a great op- portunity to meet professors and students from other universities. The department then treated the delegation to dinner at a local restaurant to relax after a long day, and to celebrate a certain person’s birthday.

While most of the delegation went back to the hotel to rest up for the next*day, two hardy souls attended the local SUB Pub free of charge, courtesy of the UNB APICS representatives. The next morning-for some still a con- tinuation of the previous night- the participants attended a num- ber of interesting lectures before learning that none of the UPEI squad was in the top four. Aftera final series of lectures, the UPEI contingent headed home.

UPEI was represented at the conference by Chris Vessey, Peter Hanus, Scott MacDonald, John Cunningham, and David MacK- innon. They were accompanied by Professor Wayne Cutcliffe. All found the conference quite inter- esting and informative.

All the delegates of both con- ferences ‘vould sincerly like to thank the Math and CS depart- ment for sponsering them at these conferences. The Friday night dinners were a pleasant surprise and were very much appreciated. We would like to thank all the faculty members who took the time out to accompany the stu- dents on these trips.

The Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship group will be hav- ing a discussion on the impor- tance of friendships with inter- national students and how you can be involved in a significant way to make someone’s stay in Canada a meaningful one. Come find out the needs of some stu- dents, the benefits of reaching out to someone from another cul- ture, and practical ways te help your international friends. Also a presentation from Pat Dobbs of the Overseas Missionary Fel- lowship will conclude the evening as he explains his life in another country. So come on out for a great evening Friday November
