Tue quantities of lumber received in the British markets last month were enormous, the sales were small, the prices have fallen to the lowest figure ever recorded, and the prospect of improvement is smaller.

Tue quarterly meeting of the Caledonia C!ub will be held in St. Lawrence Hotel, on to-morrow (Tuesday) evening, 27th inst., at eight o’clock, p.m. A full attendance of members requested.

Mr. Burpee has not yet endeaved to ex- lain the following: If in 1873 it cost $567,765 to collect $12,954,164 of Customs revenue, why, if there was no extravagance, did it take $721,604 to collect $12,546,987 in 1877?

A POLITICAL MEETING was held at Corn- wall, Lot 31, on Saturday evening. There were from eighty to one hundred electors present. Messrs. Pope andj Brecken ad- dressed the meeting, and were cordially received by all present. Henry Lawson, Esq., also spoke, and received an attentive hearing. He attempted an interruption of the proceedings, but received a_ timely rebuke from the Chairman, which had the effect of attaching him to his seat until the close,

Crime has increased alarmingly in New York during the past few weeks. The Her- ald is horrified at the increase, and in a late number says: Fights, swindles, robberies, defalcations, murders and other crimes suc- ceed each other so rapidly that a mere men- tion is all that space can allow. The strang- est feature of this abnormal and horrible state of affairs is that there seems to be nothing in the aneeeet status of society to urge men to the peculiar wickedness that have been committed. Churches and other institutions for the promotion of morality are #3 numerous and active as ever, and the responsibility of man for the condition of his brother man was never so widely admit- ted as now.

Tue Regatta on the Hillsborough, on Wednesday next, promises to be a grand success. Already a large sailing yacht has arrived from Georgetown, and others are on their way from Summerside and Pictou. The steam tug—‘* Henry Aitken—-measured the course on the East River to-day. ‘Che sailing course is from Committee’s vessel to and around a stake-beat placed off the New Asylum, thence round Red Buoy off Brick maker’s Point, thence round stake-boat to be placed off North Point, thence to place of starting, leaving all stakeboats and buoys on the starboard hand. The rowing course will be from the Committee’s vessel to Flag Buoy placed one and one-half miles toward Point Wharf, thence back to Committee’s vessel, each boat turning its own Flag Buoy on the starboard hand,

The Politische Correspondenz says that most friendly communications have passed between Austria and Servia on the oc- casion of the celebration of the Servian in- dependence.

Siinetor Francis Joseph has assured Prince Milan that he and the Servians might rely upon the most cordial swpport of Austria on all matters affecting their welfare.

Rome, Aug. 23.

Another letter from Garibaldi is pub- lished (being the seventh in the past fort- night) intended to promote agitation against the Germanic Government, and especially Austria. He denounced the Kaiserbund and Prince Bismarck’s endeavors to caress his natural ally, the head imposter of the Vatican. He says he finds nothing horrible in the programme of the German Socialists. On the contrary, two of their articles form part of his life-long convictions. Their ful- filment is indispensable for the amelioration of the material and moral condition of the people.

Lonpon, Aug. 23.

The weavers and winders in thirteen cot- ton mills at Rodclif, near Bury, struck against the reduction in their pay of 84 per cent. About 3,500 looms are idle and sev- eral hundred more are expected to stop when notice expires.

As a consequence of the taking of Sera- jeov by the Austrians, thousands of Turk- ish troops, without officers, have quitted Bosnia and passed through Simnitza, southward bound. A large number of Turkish officers surrendered to the Aus- trians, while their men escaped or were not held.

ALEXANDRIA, Aug. 23.

The Khedive has formerly accepted the recommendation of the Commission which has been inquiring into the condition of the Egyptian revenue. Nubar Pasha has agreed to form a Ministry. Rivers Wilson has telegraphed home asking permission from the British Government to accept the Ministry of Finance in the new Cabi- net.

Orrawa, Aug. 22.

Mr. Goldring, an English speculator, purchased phosphate lands here to-day tor forty-four thousand dollars cash. This is the largest transaction yet in these lands.

Several more men engaged in the Orange riots were tried here to-day. They were fined fifty dollars and costs.

One hundred municipalities will be repre- rented in presentation of the address to Lord Dufferin, which will be signed on the tug boats which will convey the deputation from Toronto. [t is expected that Lord Dufferin will make a big speech. The ad- dress will be presented at Quebec, on Thursday, September 8th.

The leader of a Church choir in Toronto well known in the best society, has destroy ed the happiness of six families. He was in the habit of instructing pupils, and thus accomplished his purpose. One of the ladies is said to be enciente. Great excite- ments prevails over the affair, and should the man be caught it will go hard with him.

Hanlan has made arrangements for a re- gatta to take place on Saratoga Bay on Friday and Saturday week. All the lead- ing oarsmen will be present. Some good prizes will be given.

Plaisted, Morris, Pat Luther and Coulter arrived at Hamilton this a.m. The course for the coming race has been laid out. There is no need of fear as regards any postponement taking place.
