GOOD SHOOTING. Islanders Doing Well.

Orrawa, Sept. 5. The weather was rather too hot to-day for shooting, but the light was good and some fine scores were made. In the stand- ing match—200 yards standing—the first prize went to Sergt. Bebille, of Ottawa, who made 33 points ; Sergt. Hall, of the 79th came second, and Bandsman Defreytas of the Halifax G. A., fourth. In the grand Snider aggregate for special prizes the scores made in the five principal matches were added together. Sergt. Hail, of the 79th, won first prize, a valuable clock, The prizes won up to-day ties for places in the grand aggregate. They will be fired off to-morrow, when the first sixty will compete for the Governor-General’s prizes. ANOTHER DESPATCH. Orrawa, Sept. 6.

The Island marksmen had great success yesterday, several of the contingent win- ning good prizes,

In the standing match Capt. J. A. Long- worth is well up on the list.

Lieut. D. L. Hooper stood second on the list in the Rideau match, winning $25, with Sapper H. Anderson fourth, captur- ing $15, Sergt. J. M. Davison, Captain Longworth, Captain Crockett, Lieut. Ewen Stewart and Surgeon Gillis also had good places in this match.

SomETHING New IN Svuicrpes.—Little- town, N. H. produces the newest style of suicide. On Saturday, George A. Parker, aged 74, was missed, and was found in the Connecticut River. He had loaded his clothes with rocks, waded into the river, stuck up a pole, and laid down by it, where he was found, Ill health was the cause.

(oren Square.—An adjourned meet- ing of citizens to consider the proposition of presenting Mr. Arthur Newbery with a suitable testimonial, is to be held in the Legislative Library, on Monday afternoon, at 4 o’cloek. The citizens who desire to ex- press their appreciation of Mr. Newbery’s exertions in their behalf will please al ® note and attend without fail.

Fitted Taem With Suor.—Two of Richard brooks’ children, while near Michael Higgins’ premises at Windsor, Ont., on Sunday last, entered his garden and got some peaches. Higgina sawthem, and going tohis house grabbed his shotgun, which was heavily load- ed, and fired at the children, striking both of them. Higgins was arrested, but subsequent- ly released on $1,000 bail. The doctor who attended the wounded children extracted 45 shot from one child and 19 from the other. They will both recover.

AvoTHEecary ILL.—We are sorry to learn that the valuable standard bred stallion Apothecary, formerly owned by Mr. Geo. E. Hughes, of the Apothecaries Hall, this city, but now by Rev, Father DeFinance, of Rus- tico, is seriously ill. He was seized a short time ago with strangles, which changed into influenza and bronchitis. He was attended by Drs. MeMillan and Leckie, but the disease was two far advanced for recovery, This will be a serious loss to Father DeFinance, who, = understand, paid the sum of $1,000 for rim.

CaTHEDRAL Burnep.—The Catholie Ca- thedral at Harber Grace, Nfid., was de- stroyed by fire at 2 o'clock, on Monday morning last. Every effort was made to save the structure, but in vain. The loss is placed at $150,000. There was no irsur- ance. The Cathedral was one of the hand- somest edifices on the continent, and was the pride ot Newfoundlanders, and the de- light of every visitor. To be discovered on fire at 2 o'clock in the morning, this warm weather, looks like the work of an incen- diary. Bishop McDonald will have the heartfelt sympathy of the people of Canada in his great loss.

,_Moxe Bio Trees.—A few days ago Tne EXAMINER stated, on the authority of an ex. vhange, that on the farm of @ Mr. Harris at Wolfville, N, S., there was an old willow ‘ree growing which measured twenty-one feet ‘round. This paragraph metaghe eye of Mr. Francis McKenna, of Rosebank farm, upon whose property some fine old willows are growing. Me thonght he could beat the Nova Scotia tree by several feet, and measured five of the largest of his trees. The circumference of the largest he found to be feet, the second 22}, the third 174, the fourth 16, and mend the = R feet. News of the Strike.

Lonpon, Sept. 5.

The officiale of the dock companies have again called upon the men who are at work, and the shipowners have made another appeal to unload the ships themselves, but they met witha curt refusal. It is said that 2000 men are now at work on the wharves.

Burns, in a speech to the dockmen to- day, predicting tht: success of the strike, announced that the demands now made were by no means final; and that when the dock companies were beaten it would not be a question of six pence an hour for an ordinary day's work and eight pence an hour for overtime, but of seven pence and nine pence respectively.

The attempt to organize a general strike of builders, engineers and other meehanics in South London has collapsed.

Five thousand steel workers in Wales threaten to strike. They demand an ad- vance of 10 per cent. in their wages,

Another Customs Circular.

Ottawa, Sept. 5. The Minister of Customs has issued 4 circular to collectors warning them that Old Tom Gin of unusual strength is being imported into Canada and that such liquor must pay duty at the rate rate of $1.90 per galion as non-enumerated spirits.
