A most enjoyable time was spent at the Social in connection with the Young Ladies’ Mission Band of the Second Methodist Church, on Tharsday evening last. There was a good display of useful and ornamental articles (the greater part of which were disposed of), also a well supplied refreshment table. Great credit is due the ladies who have worked s90 nobly to augment the fands of the Missionary Society, and the success realized must be very gratifying. We understand the proceeds were a little over forty dollars.

A SPECIAL meeting of the City Council was held on Thursday evening. The written opinion of His Honor the Recorder, concern- ing the Government’s liability in the r cent smallpox epidemic was submitted and read, Hie Honor is of opivion that the Government is respousible for all liabilities, inasmuch as the Board of Health for the city is appointed b, the Government the same as the Boards for

He said he could see no reason why an exception should be made in the ease of tha city, and concluded by statiog that the accounts should be paid by the Pro- vince out of the general revenue. A resolu- tion that the Executive Committee of the Board of Health wait upon the Government on Monday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, and place be- fore them the accounts incurred during the epidemic, together with the written opinion of His Honor the Resorder, in the matter, was carried unanimously. His Worship the Mayor read a telegram from Mr. Starr, stating that

The Deputy Sheriff and his prisoner were de- tained at Pictou Landing for over five hours, and during that time a crowd watched on the wharf, anxious to see the murderer who was on his way to the penitentiary. Gillis was, during this time, kept on board of the steamer, and it was only a short time before the train started that he was taken on shore, when the crowd had an opportunity of satisfying their curiosity. News that the notorious character was on board the train spread ali along the line, and the result was that at every station between Pictou and Dor- chester a large crowd gathered to take a look at the murderer. The party arrived at Dorchester at 10 o'clock, p. m., and within half an hour afterwards, Deputy Sheriff Curtis, with a feeling of relief, parted company with the man, whose foul deed last May shocked not only the Island, but Canada at large. It is to be hoped that the last has been heard of him, and that he will remain for the rest of bis life within the walls of the Penitentiary. We learn that DeputyOurtis’ last words to the keeper of the Penitentiary were, ‘‘See here! Their supply consisted of five carcasses, the aggregate dressed weigh of which was 3,910 lbs; and two prime carcasses of mutton weighing 192 ibs., fed by Mr. John Hamilton.—Mullin Bros. dis- play, consisting of the 1,660 lb. cow exhibit- ed Tuesday, andatwo year and 7 months heifer—the dressed weights of which were 925 Ibs., and 610 lbs. respectively-—was very creditable indeed, and their stall was well patronized, from 8 to 14 cents being the price realized per lb.—Henry Me- Gregor also had a prime quality on sale— among which was the carcass of the Mutch heifer, so greatly admired at the show. The dressed weight of his meat was 1,560 }lbs. His stall was well patronized at from |8 to 14 cents per 1b,—Wm. S Nars’ supply llocked well as also did those of Mossrs.

Mr. Josern Brsgrs, formerly of Cherry Valley, but at present a resident of this city, had a live horned owl on exhibition at the market to-day in the stall of Mr. Jas, J. Gay. Mr. Beer was out gunning at Black Banks, near Lennox Island last Tuesday evening, and noticed the owl perched on a spruce tree about a hundred yards distant, He fired and put a few of the shot in the bird’s left wing, after which it was easily captured. It is a large speci- men and was much admired by bird- fanciers. Mr. Beer is said to be an excel- lent shot, and last week brought down a goose with the same gun with which he wounded the owl at over 900 yards,
