[n almost all home circles there is much talking done during the day, but we fear there are few who do not re- serve their most brilliant conversation- al powers for other assemblages than the home group. Many a father comes home tired; he has worked hard and talked a great deal, told amusing anec- dotes and displayed much wit. He has come home to rest. He takes out his pauper, and is soon oblivious to every- thing around him, Wife would like to tell him many harrassing afflictions of the day, and would like to hear some of his interesting experiences, but if he were a deaf mute he could not be more. silent, only an occasional grunt answered her many attempts at con- versation; and the children, except the good-night kiss, and often not even that. are not noticed. Such a home, whether the abode of wealth, or other- wise, cannot be a healthy and happy one. -

As'a parallel, draw around the even- ing lamp of another home circle. The father tells the anecdotes from the papers as he reads them; mother faugtll her sweet, low laugh, and the children burst into merry ha! ha’s ! To watch them as they ask questions, and listen to the answers and patient ex- planation, the wonderment, interest, and thought imprinted on your young faces, isa picture for an artist. This home education is a heritage more valu- able «than land or money; and one beautiful recompense in life is, that in making others happy we bring happl- ness to ourselves, Parents who prac- tice self-denial, and endeavor, by cheer- ful conversation ani playful wit, to en- liven*home life, will reapa rich reward in the better thoaghts and nobler actions of their children, and will ex- perience ‘the traest and best content- ment themselves.

The Debt to Mothers.

Mothers live for their children, make self-sacrifices for them, and manifess their tenderness and love so freely,that the name mother is the sweetest in human language. And yet some, youth- ful and aged, know but little of the anxiety, the nights of sleepless and

ainfal solicitude which their mothers lake spent over their thoughtless way wurdness. Those loving hearts go down to their graves with their hours of secret agony untold. As the mother watches by night, or prays in the pri- vacy of her closet, she weighs well the words she will address to. her son in order to lead him to a manhood of honor and usefulness. She will not tell him all the griefs and deadly fears which beset her soul. She warns him trembling, lest she say overmuch. She tries to charm him with cheery love while her heart is bleeding.
