Summerside Notes.

Tse weather for the past few days has been. all that could be desired, and the country is looking excellent, with the pros- pect of an abundant harvest.

There is to be a trot at Kensington on Dominion Day, besides other sports, and a number of the citizens here are making preparations to be in attendance. The races are under the management of Mr. George Sims, Kensington, the owner of the imported stallion ‘* Sir Edwin.”

I am glad to be able to announce that Hon. J. C. Pope is improving in health. The last time Dr. Hobkirk, of Charlvtte- town, visited him, he found his patient much better than he anticipated.

Richard Hunt, Esq., has raised his house two feet, aud bas placed it upon a very handsome and substantial stone fonnda- tion. The work was done under the mat- agement of Mr. Pierce Doyle.

The Summerside Progress plant, &c., was sold by auction on Saturday last, aod bought by Mr. Patrick Crocken, an em- ploge in the Journal office, for about $200.

The brigantine ‘‘ Maggie,’ Captain Jen- kins, sailed to-day with a cargo of oats. She is owned by Hon. Captain Richards, Bideford.

Rev. J. H. Collins is to have a farewell Coricert in Ludlew Hall to-night. Messrs. W. Knight and C, Bell, of Charlottetown,. are to assist.

The Tavernier-Lewis Dramatic Company are billed“*or Ludlow Hal! on Thursday evening. Some of the company are old fevorites here, arid as the play to be per- formed is the ‘‘ Mighty Dollar,” there will doubtless be a large house. Good dramatic companies come so seldom'to Summerside that it is to be hoped the people will show theif appreciation of a yood one when it comes.

Senator Carvell arrived in Summerside this. morning, and crossed over by the St, Lawrence” to New Brunswick.

Yesterday was Declaration Day, and after a little bother, owing to one or two return- ing officers not having strictly complied with the rules laid down to them, the Sheriff, Hon. W. G. Strong, declared Messrs. Hackett and Yeo duly elected. As far as could be learned, Mr. Yeo’s majority is not nearly so large as was at first antici- pated. The Eastern School was examined to-day before two of the trustees of the school. and a fair attendance of the general public, The manner in which the pupile acquitted themselves reflects great eredit upon the teachers, the Misses McPhail.
