Grew 0f Wrecked Tanker Rescued

Norteotix. vii. Dec. at - tart _ The two remaining ere-w mem- bers of an Argentine merchant tanker have been rescued and all of the vessel's personnel has been accounted for. thq Cos-st Guard announced today.

The Coast Guard said that two seamen aboard the severed stern of the tanker, El Capitari, were removed by the Coast Guard cutter Agassiz at 8:50 mm. today.

‘The severed stern section of the tanker was located by the Cherokee, tho other Coast Guard cutter which aided in the rescue oper- ations. The Cherokee radioed that she had the stern “close aboard at 8 am.“

TLhe stern was discovered toss- ing helplessly in the Atlantic '10 miles south southeast of where she broke in two yesterday. The Cherokee rescued 10 crew members from the bow section of the vessel- the El Capltan, after it. broke up while under tow from Savannah Lo Baltimore.

The Clherokce and the BMW‘ Agassiz had searched through the night for the stern portion. Coast Guard planes were on the runways here for a takeoff this mortung to aid the search when the Cher- okee messaged she had found the floating hulk.

The cost,of keeping himself alive should be a little less. The“ little man's problem will be to keep his take-heme pay as high as in 1948.

His wife gets e. little more for her dollar at the grocery store than she did a year ago. Many clothing items are either cheaper Or better quality for the money, and there are few things she wants tt buy that aren't in good supply at last.

The slide-rule boys will tell him that almost every index they keep commodity price. consumer, wholesale price, food. cost of living - has been falling recently. The downward trends are expected to continue for a while. They dis- agree its to how steep the slope. Th; bureau of Labor Statistics

Aicttil prices are high. The most important. ones are scarce -— steel. copper. lead, zinc, tin, aluminum. So that the maker of every product. you use that has metal in it may have trouble holding his price line.

If the railroads get their rc- quested 13 per cent freicht rate increase, orl top of the hikes they made in 194B. the cost of moving food and other products uill be higher.

Passenger fares went up in 1948.

Food — the most immediate arid pressing part of the little mans family budget — is cheaper than if wosrlown niore than four per cent from the record July peak. and most observers think 1t. will become even cheaper. However. food is still at least. two per cent higher than a year ago- and 42 per cent above controlled-price days of July. 1946.

Livestock prices hit all-time peaks in August and September btit have fallen since. Rel-nil meats at. year-end were averaging 20 pr vent lower than in September.

Although meat prices may turn upward again in the early months of 1949 as fewer head are moved to market, but next fall the re- sults 0f the 1948 bumper feed crops should show up at the butcher shop in the form of a larger supply of less expensive meat.

Declining during i948, fruit and vegetable Prices should be as low or lower in 1949. given favorable weather.

Livestock

MONTREAL. Dec. 27—- (CF) - There were 161 cattle. 318 calves, ‘J5 hogs and 263 sheep for sale on the two Montreal Livestock Markets to- day.

There were no early sales of cattle registered and salesmen were asking up t0 $2 higher as buyers were bidding $1 ltigher.

Veal calves were firm. There were no good quality veals offered. Coin- mcn to medium kinds sold from 23 ~27. Grassers ranged from 15-17.

There were no early sales of hogs.

Lambs were steady at 23-25. Sheep were 7-10.50,

Most Lake Sfmcoe fishermen fish from shacks towed out over the ice and equipped with small stov- es, They haul Whitefish and lake trout through a hole in the ice while snugly screened from icy lake winds. Frozen rniitnoivs 0r shiny spinners are popular bait but even pearl buttons have been used. Blue pickerel and perch are the principal catches 0n Lake Erie.
