Cricker.— We understand that the Phoo- nix Cricket Club’s first practice for the sea- son will take place (weather permitting) to- morrow afternoon in the Park. We hear that our cricketers intend taking a tour through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia this summer to play the leading clubs of those Provinces.
THE last deposit of $1,000 in the Hanlan- Plaisted sculling race was posted on Mon- day at the ‘‘Clipper’ office. The money is now all up, and will at once be forwarded to the Mayorof Toronto,the final stakehold- er. Therace will be rowed onthe 15th inst., on Toronto Bay, and is for $2,000 the distance being twe miles straightaway,
Severat complaints have been made to us about the unsafe condition of the scow used for carrying passengers and vehicles between McEwen’'s and McCannell’s wharves —West River. It is unfit for the transfer of vehicles, and if passengers cross in it they do so at a risk of being drowned. We trust the Commission of Public Works will immediately attend to the matter and not sacrifice lives for sake of the small sum necessary to repair this scow.
Ir was our painful duty yesterday to re- cord the death of a much esteemed and respected citizen — John Haszard, Esq. He was born in Bellvue, and spent a few
ears in New Zealand, to which country he had gone when quite young. On his return to the Island, he engaged in business at St. Eleanors; and, both socially and as a business man, he was deservedly respected. He was a County Magistrate and held the office of Surveyor of Shipping for Prince Edward Island.
A most unfeeling and brutal act was exe- cuted by a man named Cusack, on Pownal Street; yesterday evening. He was passing Mr. Wm. Murray’s baking house, when a poodle made a harmless attack on him. In a moment it retreated, and when so doing, Cussack caught it by one of the hind legs and dashed it headlong against the door- step, killing it instantly. We regret to learn that there is no punishment for such heartless violence towards dumb animals, and the owner can only recover the simple value of his animal.
At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this morning, Mathew Lannigan and Joseph Higgins appeared on complaint of Mr. Win. Koughan, for using abusive and threaten- ing language towards him in his store. Lannigan was fined $6 and_ costs, or one month, and Higgins was fined 33 and costs, or 14 days; Thomas Smith appeared for obtaining money under false pretences. In this case, it appears that Smith met two little boys named _ Gardner and Newson, whom he sold a knife for 27 cents. They found the knife was not what Smith represented, and immediately returned it, and demanded their money. Smith took the knife and also the money, and marched off, telling them that they were “‘ two good boys.” He was imprisoned for 20 days with hard labor.
Tue case of the Queen at the prosecu- tion of Alex. C. Shaw against Donald Mc- Fadyen, for assault and battery on the person of Alex. C. Shaw, at Shaw’s Wharf, West River, on Friday, the 27th ult., was tried before Theo. DesBrisay and John Brecken, Esqs.; J. P’s for this County, this forenoon. Mr. McFadyen was convicted and fined $16 and costs or two months im- prisonment. Alexander McFadyen and Angus McEachren, for assisting Donald in the assault, were both fined $10 or six weeks imprisonment. In addition to the above fine the three assailants were each ordered to enter into his own recognizance with two securities of $100 each to keep the peace and be of good behavior for 12 months ; and, on affidavit of one of the assailants, Mr. Shaw was also bound to

Hence the Post infers that the Government hopes to be able shortly to communicate information which will render the debate unnecessary.

Ata meeting of the Preston Poor Law Guardians yester- day, it was stated that there had been a great increase in the number of applications for parish relief during the week. Deputa- tions have waited upon employers at Black- burn to solicit aid for the most distressed cases. In many instances the requests were acceded to, soup and other necessaries being provided.

A correspondent ‘at St. Petersburg tele- graphs that the French Ambassador just from Paris, called upon the Emperor on Monday and in answer to an enquiry from the Czar as to what France would do in the event of war, Le Flo replied that France certainly would not interfere in favor of either belligerent. The Emperor was greatly offended at this remark and some ill-tempered language followed. The result was that the French Ambassador concluded the interview by saying, ‘‘France has paid sufficiently dear forthe right which she now claims to steer clear of other nations’ quarrels.” This rejoinder was received by the Czar with such indignation that Le Flo has declared his intention to ask to be re- called.

It is stated that Count Grippenberg will meet Roach and other shipbuilders in New York to-day; also that a cartridge contract was recently made by a Connecticut factory with Russia.
Negotiations are also progressing for a large number of torpedoes for the Russian navy, and that a Russian naval instructor has been working for several months in the United States shipyard as a draughtsman ; also that the steamship Great Republic was sold yesterday at San Francisco to unknown parties.
One Mulligan is said to be visiting the cities between Chicago and the East, stir- ring up the Fenians against Canada. He was in Syracuse yesterday, and stated that 10,000 Fenians could be raised to march on Canada at thirty hours’ notice.
