I have seen some lovely color- ed leaves on branches of Maple Trees and In the garden the Vib- urnum (Snowball shrub) I3 col- oring a a nice bronze. making it an attractive shrub for autumn. Nature with Its magic brush paints a colorful picture in the next few weeks. Gold ls,levery- where - in garden and field we catch once more the glorious freshness oi the color that comes to us first in the spring and now. towards summer's end. has come again to cheer us.

Here in the Klrden "10 roses have been almost as beau- tlful as the June ro-e sarden and I have seen some wonderful dis- plays in other gardens. Over at the Memorial Nursery Gardens I enjoyed seeing hundreds d varieties in full. bloom and other garden minded folk were on- joying the lovely night and mak- ing notes on varletia for their own garden. It is a good time to see the flowers. plants and shrubs you wish to order for the garden and the staff were very busy filling orders for bulbs and taking ordas for spring.

It is such fun to be looking a- head and planning and it al- so helpa the Nursery staff in their knowing of the requirements of the patrons and as these orders must be sent soon to the growing fields it is wise to think llllll and anticipating a more lovely garden "next year" will make the winter pass more pleasantly for us all. i I have never seen the memor- ial gardens so colorful and at- tractive. The lack of time to real- ly enjoy the gardens in a leisure ly fashion makes me think a sec ond visit must be planned very soon while it is possible to make notes on varieties. The panaics leading to the rose garden was-e finer than I have ever seen and the tuberous begoaias planted as a carpet for the -hododendrons in the shade oi the pines were brllllt and cheery. The large orange haws on the hedge roses made them a very attractive badge for autumn and rows and rows of many varieties of shrubs were thrifty and shapely trees for our gardens at the time planned. There are many colors and varieties which can be grown with- out any trouble. In the garden here they were wlntered in the cellar, but only yesterday a gar- den vlsltor told me she had win- tered them successfully out in the garden on the north side of our island. To see them bloominl throuzh the snow is a wonderful experience and they are worth any effort it is necessa y to hub for them. A collection cu be gathered together by division of the plants and so they are a thrifty investment.

TIME FOR BOUQUET!

In this month it is pleasant to see the biennlals and perennials growing in the field where the seeds were hurriedly sown in late spring. Violas and sweet pwllllam and thyme in quanity also foa- glove and rows of herbs frag- rant and lovely. They will all be planted in the garden when tim- permits. it is also the time to lather seed pods and other flowers for dried bouquets. l have seen some very attractive vases of flowers prepared in this way House plants are being carried nearer to their winter quarters and the geranium and other sllpe are potted up for color in the coming months. It is a good time to gather bouquets for those who have not any flowers and if you take good care with the arrange- ment of them and always include some fragrant flowers they will be appreciated. A bouquet of mix- ed flowers from the garden is more interesting to someone who is laid aside and can take time to really enjoy the different var-

M". KITTY W. Cudmore, Pro- vincial Commissioner of the Girl Guides Association, presided at the first fall Executive Meeting held on Thursday, September i3th. There was an attendance of 3 members. To open the meeting, the Guide Law was repeated in unison, and this was followed by a few moments of silent prayer.

After the minutes of the May meeting had been read and ap- proved, very satisfactory reports were given by the Treasurer. Mrs. Burnett, and the Field Secretary, Mrs. W.A. Smith. Division and Dis- trict Commlssioners then told the meeting of the progress which has been made in obtaining leaders for the various companies packs and gave the approximate dates for opening meetings. The news that. in addition to many who are prepared to carry on as leaders. some 2) new Gulders had already been obtained was receiv- ed with great satisfaction.

Reports from the Badge, Camp, Finance. Hospitality and Internat- ional Commlttees followed, all of which showed renewed enthuslapm and activity in the various phases of Guide Work. Mrs. Llnkletta. Head of Training, announced that the first Fail Training would be held at Charlottetown on Saturday. Oct- ober 13th. A very welcome announcement was made by Mrs. Cudmore to the effect that she had received in- formalion from Premier Matheau that the Government is now pre- pared to make a grant towards Guide Work in this Province, amount to be based on the num- ber of active Guides.

H Quarter Century

Graduate of the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing cele brated the 25th., Anniversary of their Alumnae on Wednesday, sept- ember 12th. The day began with morning Mass in the Chapel of the Charlottetown Hospital. celebrated by Reverend Richard Ellsworth, who was himself observing .the 25th.. anniversary of his ordin- ation of the Holy Priesthood. Dur- ing the Mass several hymns were beautifully rendered by Reverend Bernard Gillls. For the occasion the altar was decorated with flo- wers in memory of the departed members of the lumnae.

In the evening approximately Ill) nurses gathered at the Clover Club for a banquet and social evening. Nurses were present from many parts of the Island, and included in the group of religious and lay nurses were representatives from almost every class of yaduataa from the first class of 1923 to 1956. The members from each graduat- ing class were seated together and many old acquaintances were re- newed and many experiences rt.- lived with former class-mates, some of whom they had not seen for many years. Following a del- icious turkey dinner served by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Canadian Legion. a toast to their Alma Mat- er was proposed by Mrs. L.0. Kelly, one of the class of 1923. It was responded to by Miss Mary Rose MacDonald. a 1955 grad- llaie.

Mrs. Gerald Maddigan. Pres- ident of the Alumnae, in her re marks paid tribute to Miss Mae King. a member of the first grad- uating class of the hospital. and the first Alumnae President. Miss King was for many years Super- visor of the obstetrical Depart- ment of the hospital. This tribute was met with a hearty round of applause by all of the nurses. Mention was also made of the late Reverend Mother Paula. through whose efforts the first

An enjoyable sing-song was held and included songs reminiscent of student nurse days. Accompanlsts for the sing-song were three stu- dent nurses. the Misses Anne Marie Mccormac. Patsy Mac Donald and Audrey Gallant. Pic- tures of each graduating class from 1923-1956 yiojected on a screen proved to be a highlight of

of much merrlment. and nostalgic memories. Many of them were accompanled by humorous anec- dotes of training-day experiences in verse. read by Mrs. Harry Murphy. A reading by Mrs. Joseph Donahue "Being Cllnlced" was much enjoyed by the audience. "Our School Alumnae" recited in unison brought this part of the entertainment to a close.

Later in the evening the nurses were joined by husbands and fri- ends for dancing. Music was fur- nished by a trio consisting of Cliff- ord Peters at the piano with Art McQuaid and Lyman Dunsford on violins. It was felt by all to be a most enjoyable get-together and many hopes were expressed for a similar reunion in the years to come.
