H. Herrick at the fourth annual road race of the Detroit Wheelmen’s Club, at Det roit, on Saturday. His desperate effort to smash the 2.57 mile 1ecord ended in failure owiog to the lack of wind. The first five miles were made in 15 47, the second five in 14 25, the third five in 14.25, the fourth five in 14 57, and the twenty-five miles in | hour, 21 minutes and 54 seconds. New Trapnr Parer.—We have received the firat number of the Canadian Engineer. a new trade paper published in the interests of the mechanical, marine and sanitary engineer, the manufacturer, the contractor and the merchant. The publication cfiice js at 62 Church street, Toronto, with out- side offices at Montreal and London, England. The appearance of the paper is quite attractive. The illustrations are ex cellently produced, and have the merit of being devoted to practical matters of trade There are in all 28 pages besides the covers of thick paper. Tur Cosan.—The steamer Coban, Captain Robert Fraser, left last evening for St. John’s via North Syduey, taking the following cargo: Shipped by B Rogers, 4 horees; by G Toombs, 2 horses and 2 ploughs; by G Wheat ley, 2 horses and 6 sheep; by Jos McCarey, 2 horses; by Long Bros, | horse and 3 sheep; by Wm Boyle, 9 bags leather; by P Duffy, 10 bags turnips; by Carvell Bros, 158 bils pork and 157 bales hay; by A Herne & Co, 100 bags oats and 14 tubs butter; by John Scott, 3 tubs butter. For Sydney she had 1 crate pigs, shipped by R E Longworth, and 11 head of cattle, shipped by N B & M Rattenbary. Tue Late Patrick Hieors’ Estate — Our readers wil] remember that after the death of the late Patrick Higgins, of Char- lotretown Rwuyalty, who perished in a snowstorm some two years ago, his will was contested by his brothers and sisters on the ground = that he was, at the time of making it, unable to do so. The will was sustained however, by the late Judge of Protate. By ita terms the testator gave all his estate in trust for a little girl named Lawlor, whe resided with him for her life, and at her death to her children. The will providsd that in case the little girl died without issue the entire estate should revert to Higgins’ heirs at law. This event has happened, as the girl died yesterday morn- ing without issue, and now Higgins brothers and sisters come into possession of the property the same as if their brother had died intestate and without leaving any issue.

E. leland, aud siler tn the Smith Brewer pulp mill, while at work on Saturday afternoon, was caught in a shaft making two hundred revolutions a minute. ‘hen the body was found it was unrecognizsble and simply ® mass of flesh Une leg was wrenched from the body and thrown forty foet away. Bits of flesh, cloth ing and splashes of blood covered the floor and walls. When last seen he passed a fellow workman on his way to the room, asked the time and was told it was 330 o'clock. ‘*! he clock must be slow,” he sui i. Twenty minutes after a map was passing, and he saw some object wound on the shait He signalled the eugineer to stop, a! d the object proved to be — body. It is presumed Baggen attempted to climb ov er the shaft end was caugat on the waste hanging from his pocket in the rapidly revolving rod.

Some of these cattle weigh as heavy as 2,400 Ibs. They come down the S:. Lawrence and are raised in Ontario and Quebec. New Facrory.—Tho enterprise of Coun- cilior Hogan in fitting up a new wood- werking factory is worthy of commenda- tion. The factory is located on Great George Street, near the office of the Steam Navigation Company. The building is three stories high, with stene foundation The boiler and engine are placed on the first or ground floor, at the east end of the building. The engine is of the most approved pattern, and is very powerful. On this floor also is the main shaft vith pulleys to drive the different machines such es planer, match-r, beader, jointer, moulder, morticer, etc. Oa tise second floor are the lathes and saws, and the third floor is used as a store-room.
