.A letter from Hon. D. FM. Ottawa, takes some exception to II article handed “The Overworkcd Scum” which appeared recently in this paper. Senator Ferguson claims that. much more work was done on 18th April than was shown incur account of the proceedings of the day. which account W colic oillcial. The only abbreviation in our re port. was that we classed as "routine procesdlnga,".t.he laying on the table ol a number of petitions and the reading of a large number of petitions. This is purely.1 routine. .

Senator Ferguson tolls that the Senate

is putting through much important work and has more on hand. But almost all the “important work" comes from the Commons. and cn 18th April the Senate met for the ﬁrst time after -28th March when it had adjourned for thrnc weeks to allow the work to accumulate. Tho rs speeted Senator tells that “the stain of the order paper for the 19th nni follow ing days shows that a gooddcal of activity was displayed." Surely. after an adjourn- ment of three weeks, it was time for the Senators to get busy. Senator Ferguson in his letter proceeds to say that “the trouble here is more with the newspapers than with the Senate. The papers that have only one repre~ sentative here keep him in the Commons and know nothing of what the Senate is doing. and the papers, even if they had the matter cannot find space after doing iustice to the Commons.” There is much truth in this but why blame the news- papers] Experience observation have taught the newspaper men what. the people desire to knoir of the proceed- ings in Parliament and they have learned that the people care very little as to what is said or done in the Senate except on rare occasions. V

\Ve have the highest respect for Senator Ferguson as a worthy and patriotic public man,cxceedingly well in- formed on public affairs, and industrious as well. There are other Senators not a few of this class, but their lights are hid under a bushel. The Senate is looked upon by the people as a sort of political cemetery in which when the bodies are laid away they cease to be of account in sublunnry aﬂairs. The reason lies partly in the constitution of the House, largely in the Senators themselves. If the Solute would originatcsomc useful mcaodre or reject some bad measure that has been passed by the Commons, it would speedin ﬁnd the newspapers and the public taking account of its doings. We have to go back years in its history to ﬁnd such an instance. it. is becoming more sfiete and useless. liai’f awakening now and then to pass a salary grab or pension graft and thou tailing asleep again.
