Fuller, of Oitawa, who was in the {States during the presidential campaign, gives the press the tollowing letter received from « Democrat of New York: “I have no doubt that the Democratic congress will take a broad view of the question in reference to reciprocity with Canada and be very liberal in its treatment of the matter, resulting in a closer and more intimate connection with our neighbors on the north, for I am certain that it is the feeling of what Lincoln used to call the ‘‘plain people” of this country—to be good friends with your “‘people.”

Qvuezec, Nov. 30.—It is reported that Premier DeBoucherville persenally objects to Hon. Mr. Chapleaa being appointed governor of the Province of Quebec, and declares that he will resign if such appeint- ment should take place. The two leaders have been unfriendly since the premier oppesed the sele of the North Shore rail- way. Mr. Chapleau has, however, intormed his friends that he will open the next session of the legisiature.

Hauirax, Nov. 30.—The North British society to-night celebrated St. Andrew's day for the one bundred and twenty-fourth time. The dinner was one of the most brilliant ever given by thesociety. Greetings were received from sister societies in Vancouver, Toronto, Quetec, St. John, Montreal, Boston and Ottawa. The North British Society has a capital of $234,000, and during its history the society has contributed $50,000 in charity. Last year $1,000 was so given-

Some of our newspaper friends, and, to a certain extent, the hotel committee have fallen into an error in supposing that tke fate of the scheme depended upon the sup- port of those fortunate people among us who can, if they will, invest one thousand dollars at a time, and as soon as the com- mittee had asked many such people for their support and seemed to be at the limit of their tether in that direction they came back to the starting stske and had to re- ceive an impetus before they started off for pastures new in another direction. It is not the great even's which constitute a man’s life—it is the aggregate of all the minor events with the greater ones stand- ing out juore conspicuously aa mile stones on the way; it is the constant dropping of smail drops which wears away the stone; it is the saving of pennics which mskes the pound, and it is often the small leaks which sink the shp. So, too, it is usually the small offerings which make up the buik of a fund, and in the present istance it wiil probably be the smaller amounts that will give ua the lunged-for hotel.

If one person cannot subscribs even one hundred dollars, why cannot tour friends club together and take one share, And why should not the clerks of one establish- ment subscribe towards one or more shares in smali amounts, so that in the list of shareholders there would appesr such a name as “che employes of Mark Wright & Co,” or “the employes of John Newsvo,” “of McKinnon & McLean,” or of any diy goods firm or of any other kind of bus- ness,

It is wonderful how powerful a force is personal interest. We all know how it im- presses @ process upou ovr memory to doa thing, instead «f simply knowing how 4 thing is done, and it 18 personal interest which always ‘ booms” an undertaking. Think, then, how much move likely the hotel is to become an accomplished fact if a great pumber of individuals have per- sonal ic terest in it. Each one will work for its success, each one will write letters to their friends lauding its advantages, and spreading the knowledge of its existence and competition in this direction will lead to the same result as it always leads to if not abused, that is to ssy, increase of revenue.

Last year an American gentleman visiting Char'ottetown and ‘‘killing time” here worked hard to bring the Press Associ stion to the island, and the loss of the advertisement we missed by the failure of his work is charge- able in some degree tu the partial indifference and slow action of our people. To have such people among us is worth something, and the prespective summer hotel will bring them to us. OBSERVER.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. The Note Problem.

Sir,—When and from whom are we to have a decision regarding the accuracy of the svlutions to that ‘“‘note problem ?” What is the problem, anyway? If it isa decision of whether or not compound inter- est should be computed on # note dr:wn as it was, I presume any lawyer, benk cfticial or moncy lender in the city could quick)y tell what the Island statutes sy on that point.
