The German Imperial Army is to be increased to 480,000 infantry, and 60 per cent in artillery.

Henry Ward Beecher gets along rapidly. He now denies that God is the direet author of the Bible, and says that Slavery and Mormonism are both taught by the Bible and that the

Beecher’s dignified rhetoric is as power- ful as his logic. Beecher evolves “like thunder.” making a loud noise and then dying away in the distance.
The new Connecticut law against “flash” literature, which has just gone into effect, imposes a fine of $50 or less, and imprisonment for three months or less, or both, at the discretion of the Court, upon every person who shall sell, lend, give or offer, any book, maga- zine, pumphlet,or paper devoted wholly cr principally to the publication of criminal news, or pictures and stories of deeds or blood-shed, lust or crime.
The convention of American railway master mecoanics met at Willard’s Hall, Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The vice-president, Mr. J. Davis Barnett, of Port Hope, Ont., presided. The object of the convention is to discuss all matters relating to the question of railway mechanics, with the view of extending the improvements and still further developing the rail- way “art.” Mr. H.
