AN OLp CRaDLE.—A family in this town boasts of having the oldest child’s cradle ia the country. f a family of seven sisters and «brothers, 53 of their children were rocked in it, and 109 youngsters of more or less relationship. The cradle is now doing duty to a child of the third generation of the same family, and is as good as ever.—Lunenburg

Influenza Increases.

_ The plague of influenza is not stayed, but increases. In London the death rate has risen to forty-six. The dexths from in- fluenza last week are twice as many as those of the previous week, not counting those of which this milady is the indirect cause.

Drowning Accident.

Dustin, Feb. 3. A boat containing a number of sailors be- longing to the warship Beileisle capsized in the harbor yesterday and four of the crew were drowned.

WasuHineton, Feb. 1.—The threatened trouble’ with Chili «has already cost the government a good deal of money. The total extraordinary expense, it is estimated, will not fall short of $2,000,000. These expenditures, however, have been incurr-d with the fuil’ knowledge and assent of the Senate and Huuse Naval Committees, and there will be no question about their ap- proyal. -Nearly all the expenditure was for naval construction, ammunition, sup- plies, etc., and much of this expense is only anticipated, as the cual supplies and other materials will ali be used. Quxsec, Feb. 1.—New and more glaring scandais are daily coming to light. I: is now alleged that J. R. Booth, Ottawa's lumber king, and president of the Canada Atl=ntic railway, in order to get a subsidy of $200,000 for the railway bridge at. Valleyfield, had to pay the notorious grit clique $50,000. It has also transpired that during the early cays of the Mercier regime, the Jacques Cartier bank, which had a claim of $100,000, had to pay $5,000 to Mercier’s partner before the toll gate could be passed.

Honrinetom, Que., Feb. 1.—Dr. Cameron, one of the few English Liberals who sup- ported Mercier in the last parliament, is out in support of the Debouchervilie government, s:ying that he can never vose for Mercier’s return to power. On the other hand, the doctor has such a tricky political record that some of the Liberals have asked George W. Stevens, ex-M P. P tocome forward in the interest of good governmen.

Lonpon, Feb. 1 Reports have been received in the city of Highland floods causing devastation in Scotland. Bridges in the village of Bonar and adjacent places have been destroyed, and much other damage caused by the raging waters, Valley Kyle of Sutherland near the northern extremity of Scotland has been converted into an immense lake causing great loss to property and con- siderable distress among the people. A number of houses have been submerged by the floods and many sheep drowned.
